Not me, I prefer a belligerent belayer over a sober hands down. Its a great incentive to not fall and if you do, they usually give the softest catch.

Being stoned makes you a worse belayer? That is debateable. I have belayed a lot of people while under the influence and been belayed by a homies that were so high they looked like asian zombies. But, being under the influence is my normal state, so mundane tasks like driving or belaying aren't more difficult for me.

FWIW, I don't smoke and climb outside anymore, but I generally am blazed to deal the gym environment.

In any case, belaying with a gri-gri isn't that hard. It is bad form, but you could have you hands off the rope, except to feed out slack, and the leader will be fine. Gris catch every time, the belayer is just dead weight with the occasional feeding out or reeling in of slack.

I have put noobs on gri gris to belay me ...guilty...out of desperation. I would take a sober good smelling noob on gri over a foul hot shot stoner or a hangover egotistical fucktard any day!

Vivica youre not wrong, its cool. I appreciate your honesty.

I smoke and climb daily and so do many, if not all of my friends. Youd never know we were stoned if you saw us out. In fact youd probably have a great time and have some stimulating conversations.

Just because I smoke marijuana all the time doesnt mean im dangerous, uneducated (no vast vocabulary, only says "dude" or "bro" or "uh..." etc) and/or an overall menace to society.

I just heard there is some stirrings in the federal government to legalize it in the next few years. I will take the largest hit and exhale it so triumphantly around the first fat, conservative, southern, red faced police officer I come across when that happens.

Why so angry? You should take a puff or something...

I don't need mind altering substances. My life is about making money, then spending it on things me and my boyfriend enjoy. I have to be professional and marketable in order to sustain the lifestyle I love to lead. No need to miss me no need for attachments...I am just a traveler on the roads of this beautiful country...just trying to survive...searching for answers...

A. Elenor confirmed
B. I agree, people who puff have bad priorities. Better to make one's life about making money.
C. "I have to be professional and marketable . . ." You do know that more than half the people here are engineers, doctors, lawyers, business owners, etc? I'll put it this way - Clinton was a two-term President.
D. I think you have confused smoking pot recreationally with being a homeless junkie.

It's interesting to read this thread- shows how many different types of people identify themselves as climbers these days.

As Cor has mentioned, most of the original Yosemite dirtbags of the '60s and '70s were fond of the marijuana.

Now that climbing is kind of mainstream a crag can have Vivica and her man searching for answers, while me and my buddy are lighting it up on a neighboring route. Don't be a hater people! Recognize the history of anti-establishment dirtbag climbers who like to smoke the weed that continues today. If you don't like my fire that's fine I won't force it down your throat, but expect to smell some ganj at the crag, especially in CO.

Cor wrote:rging, choose the right! Which should be easy in SLC. ;D (Just joking with ya buddy!) People are beating a dead horse here. Drugs and climbing(climbers) goes way back in time. (In American climbing for sure.) For good entertainment on this, check out ReelRock8 that is going around now. The Yosemite Stone(d) Masters section is a great reflection on history. (And it was not just those Yosemite Masters who were the only culprits by the way…)
Ya, we lean way right in Utah for sure. My point wasn't if it were safe or not just the crazy notion that some people think that just because a person can sport climb a 5.14 they should implicitly be trusted with your life. Ask Peter Hilary about his K2 climb when 8 professionals went up and only 1 came back. He made his own assessment regardless of the opinions of the accompanied professionals.

I'm 100% against weeds in the crag. Especially poison ivy.

You seriously think smoking pot makes someone less professional and/or marketable?? I'm sorry but you most certainly have no idea what you are talking about. Pot smoking does not make you a transient crack whore. I know plenty of people held in higher esteem then you or I that regularly choose to relax with a much safer alternative to alcohol. I'm sorry these people understand something you will never be able to wrap you tiny closed mind around.

Yes it does matter, Che, if you get drug and alcohol tested pretty much every 3 months. Besides I would not smoke pot or cigarettes or drink even if I never got tested...because I don't like it. Hard for you to understand. ...cos you have small brain :(
