I concur, if the soob is running good sell the westy, leave the dog with ma. I'm sure most have been where your at. life has a way of fucking up plans, put the past behind you and get excited about the potential before you

a side note, I dont own a dog. friends with dogs on the road tend to run into issues(hotel rooms, crags, covert camping etc).

One thing I learned in life is that theres always somebody worse off and better off than you. Also that as different as we all are we are the same in basic needs. I greatly admire peoples preseverance and the power of motivation more than anything material. Stay true to your passion!

Chicks do dig dogs. As a 26 YO climbing female, I would give a guy major side-eye if he interrupted me while I was doing my thing, but if he had a dog I might go up to him to play with the puppy. Maybe leave the dog and go visit wherever she would slow you down, then come back for her before you move to Colorado.

Also: the Westfalia looks waaay more comfortable for semi-habitation to me. Is gas mileage a concern?

Hey man. I don't think you post sounded whiny at all. The old crusty farts saying you're being whiny just never have experienced real love before and are content trolling around on Internet forums until they die in a year or so.

While you're young sell that piece of shit VW for way more than its worth because some hippy wannabe is going to pay for it

Next drop your dog off at your moms because that dog is really going to limit what you can do and your mom would love the company.

Your subaru will be a solid living space if you build a sleeping platform. It will do fine on rough roads and get better gas mileage than a truck.

Drive around the country climbing and scoping out places to live. Every Starbucks in the country has free Internet. When you're in town apply for jobs and then go in to the bush for a few days. When you come back to civilization and check your email, hopefully you'll have some hits.

I've been in your same exact spot man. You'll be loving the freedom and you'll find where you're supposed to be.

$10 says he's back with the girl mention in the OP and never left WI.

Man, I lived in Stevens Point for almost 4 years more than a decade ago.

Jesus.

If anyone gets anything valuable from reading this thread, get the hell out of Wisconsin and take your friends with you. If they won't go with you, leave anyway.

Free to do whatever the hell you want! Someday you're going to look back on this point in your life and realize what an incredible opportunity it was, and hopefully you won't have blown it. Finish your apprenticeship, pick a vehicle, load your shit, and hit the road!
x2

Sell 1 of the vehicles - use the cash to "spruce" up the other and make it bomber road worthy. I dislike dogs but still say KEEP THE DOG - forget the girl. Enjoy your new life man - here in Colorado we have shit tons of hot climber girls. It's true - some day you will look back and be glad to picked yourself up and headed out on the road and made new friends and climbing partners!

Ryan, your situation is eerily like mine.
I too am looking to save up, do some dirtbagging, and make the move out West within 1-2 years, most likely to Rad-o. Pretty much the standard Midwest 20-something climber's dream.
A guy with your climbing (and kayaking) skills and enthusiasm would be way happy out there.
Whenever stuff gets tough, I draw on my excitement for the future and it gets me through. I bet it would work for you too.
In the meantime, let's paddle together again and maybe get some climbing in too!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
