New MP Lay out?????

M Sprague · · New England · Joined Nov 2006 · Points: 5,090

Does anyone know of a way to turn the mp app add off in chrome so it doesn't keep flicking back and forth? I have already read it. Now it is just becoming irritating.

If anyone is familiar with MTB Project you'll see lots of similarities in the design.

I think the new layout can be improved but I really like how all of the ads have been corralled into the spray area so one can easily focus on the content of the site if so desired.

Love that! thanks for taking the words off the photos!

Yes, much improved. I just noticed there is no back button on the slideshow anymore that I can see. It was nice to go back to a previous photo when you missed it to be able to click on it.

The MBproj site has some of the same issues. but the layout is a little better, more balanced looking.

Just last week I was thinking to myself how the MP format has been the same for so long, it was kind of getting stale so to speak. Like anything new & different I'll give it some time.

The picture formating needs some help - photo's getting partially cut off & side border weirdness if the pic is not wide enough. (thanks for getting rid of the text! much better)

My map doesn't show up - it's stuck on "loading map data". How do I fix that?

I'm not sure that bubble map needs to be on the front page. Mine (CO) is so dense with those bubbles you can't even hit on all of them.

On the whole, I like it. The previous layout truncated what is now called The Spray. Text sizes are better, the hierarchy of the home screen matches my daily use. The layout handles re-sizing a lot better. The frames are nice. Using different size markers on the map to indicate the number of routes is nice, but It's not awesome visually in areas that have a lot of climbing. Agree that the flashing app ad is a REAL problem; you should just do away with it; people really do know about apps. After I use it for a few days, I may have more to say, though I agree with some of the specific criticisms above.
On a side note, a lot of websites that I frequent have undergone comprehensive redesigns lately. Mostly, they suck. This is really a pretty conservative overhaul that has been long overdue.

Just like when FACEBOOK changed its layout everyone hated it, but as time wears on it simply grows on you, and this may be the case as well?

Not sure its any cleaner, I thought the old way was not broken so no need to fix.
Depends on what everyone's preference is: I don't care about the 'route Finder' box so it being under the main photo is unimportant to me, as is the World map below it. I use route finder lots, by just going to the bottom, clik on a state and go from there.

Main scrolling photos should be bigger. Top forum posts and news at the top are good for me.

Woo hoo - into the fourth page of feedback!

Some changes:

  • Text pulled off the top photo
  • You can click the top photo to open the photo page, or right-click it to open in a new tab
  • The "What's New in Your Favorites" links have bee restored
  • The page only asks for your position once (instead of repeatedly in some browsers), and of course you can say no to that

And some responses:
  • A few folks might not realize the map is very interactive and can be zoomed, panned, etc.
  • A few folks might not realize you can click one of the small icons on the Photos to pause it or go back to any other photo.
  • "It looks like a programmer layout" Ha! MP has never been a beauty queen. We're trying to improve on the past, and not let "perfect get in the way of good", and the old page had significant problems.
  • There are quite a few comments about wide screens, skinny screens, and phone screens. We did tons of work on this issue and continually compared the old site to the new one in these cases. Of course it could always be better, but the new version is a huge improvement in this issue.
  • Most of the replies are from long-time MP users. But the home page needs to make sense to brand new users, and some features are geared towards them, particularly the map.
  • Lots of folks don't like the ad for the app. As a free site, we're going to have ads, and most of them have moving parts these days, whether it's from MP or anyone else.

Thanks for all the opinions and keep them coming.

+1,000,000 for listening to the users! I don't know what else has changed today on the new format but I see you already removed the MP slogan from the pictures after people on here said they didn't like it. That's cool.

In general, I like it. I come to the site for the forum, route/crag info, and news, roughly in that order. And that's how I get it in the new format. That's good.

Not sure how I feel about the map. In general, I think about climbing locations in terms of some idea of "areas," and not really map-locations. I don't really discover anything by being able to see them in detail on a map. However, when I am looking at an area or crag, the map becomes useful. I don't really see the point of having it on the front page.

As others have said, the most obnoxious part is that stupid app ad. You could make it just as effective by making it display in a sidebar banner, half that size, and not flashing.

On larger monitors, the new layout is not an improvement over the past, due to the way a two-column layout is being presented on these sizes. Part of the issue is continuing to use the same percentages for widths of elements for screens more than 1280px wide as you do for smaller screens. If we use the sidebar as an example, using a width of 34% at this size means the sidebar is HUGE. Using a width of 67% for the left-hand column also results in stretched content divs (such as the route finder div).

For this reason (and others), it's rare to see full-width sites that have two clearly-outlined columns at larger resolutions.

Nice to see the text has been pulled off the photo on the main page. Looking MUCH better.

I like the new layout. Could we have a way to change the default location of the map? I'm currently working in a virtual environment and it seems to think I'm in Chicago.

The login name on the top right has a + instead of a space.

Like: Larger rotating photo.
Like: forums up top.
Like: map on front page.
Dislike: all the areas at the bottom. too much clutter for sure.
Dislike: black borders on everything. If you guys are going to overhaul the front page, how about getting some real design elements going. still looks very 2005 plone to me.
unsure: "Spray" section. seems like this design element could be done more gracefully.

The way pics are displayed now, without the banner wording on top but with some identifying info across the bottom is much better than Version 1. Thanks for the fix.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
