Last great alpine problems?
Not like I'll ever do one, but I am curious . . .what are the last great alpine problems now? |
Climate change? |
The Stairway Icefall in AK, 7,0000ft of gnar. It's never been ascended, but Chuck Comstock flew a hang-glider off top and crashed a few times in the ice fall during the Wilderness Classic Race. He used the frame of the hang glider to keep him out of crevasses on the 65 mile solo glacier travel approach up the backside. |

NW Face of Devils Thumb, Alaska, has yet to be climbed, though many have tried (and some have died trying). It's big, beautiful, and obvious. |
theres lots of routes and traverses that have yet to be accomplished... |
Tibet |
erhard loretan and norbert joos completed the first traverse of Annapurna(up east ridge and down French route) in 1984. Thanks for the others though |
Olympus Mons, tallest mountain in the solar system. I'm calling it! |
haha that is funny, unfortunately you are wrong to call it tallest in the solar system as Rheasilvia, an impact crater, is slightly taller. check your facts ppl!! |

I truly believe there are limitless alpine problems. Ueli Steck was getting a lot of attention last season trying to get a FA (traverse) on Everest when the sherpa fight went down (knowledge courtesy of Reel Rock 8, go see it). If there's still novel stuff to be done on Everest, all is good. |
He wasn't attempting a traverse of Everest(which was first done in 1963 by an American pair) He went to the mountain with no pre-determined route in mind, but wasn't PLANNING a traverse. The Lhotse Everest traverse though, is a good last problem. After that, Nuptse/Lhotse/Everest. |

Well... Gasherbrum V and Gasherbrum VI have never seen a first ascent. The latter involves a ton of continuous, committing climbing on vertical snow, ice, and chossy rock. The former has a ridiculously complicated series of crevasse navigation challenges. If you do either of those, you'll definitely be a feature story in the AAJ. |

Masherbrum has a big face that's about a mile higher than Trango that hasn't yet been climbed. |
