Did they work for you? How much weight do you usually use? How many reps/sets?

Any other tips?

At a minimum; deadhangs!

There really isn't a good way to train your swing technique and the muscles associated with swinging without climbing ice. You can do an overhead tricep press. Its a similar motion , but just not the same. Climbing telephone poles is pretty damn close to the real thing.

Fortunately, training the strength to hold on to tools is a lot easier. Just drytool stuff. Drytool jungle gyms, the underside of stairwells, stone walls, anything. You'll be training your mind as well, on how not to overgrip, how/when to shake out, how to deal with the pain of the pump and still hold on. Just lifting weights, and not incorporating the mental aspects of training, is nowhere near as effective.

That's seems like pretty good advice.

Will Gadd's book has a great set of workouts. That guy knows how to get strong for ice climbing! (hmmm, rollies aren't in the mix)

I followed his plan the last two seasons it helped a ton. Made the climbing much more fun, and I climbed as strong as ever.

I'll keep an eye out for Will's book, but any hints as to what he recommends?

Prancercise, man. Lots, and lots of prancercise.

Also: repeats of calf raises, ice tool deadhangs, tool swings and core exercises.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
