If I recall correctly, the movie was filmed in NC, but I can't place the picture.

Supposedly it was filmed in the linville gorge, and at chimney rock. That could be chimney

it kind of looks like the ghost town area cliffs before the bald proper. Definitely hickory nut gorge

Ghost Town on the left and the Bald recessed in the back right. They are standing on Chimney Rock property.

Damn good cragging over there. Too bad that state-owned land is off limits to climbers nowadays though.

The village in the movie used to be located right under the cliff. It was apparently there up until just a few years ago when the land was bulldozed to make way for a high-end development. Luckily, it went under and was spared.

Love that movie.

Pretty cool to compare the young D.D. Lewis in that film to "Lincoln".

I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid - just now learned that Hawkeye was DDL. There Will Be Blood = DDL's magnum opus.

I think this is pretty definitive:

(This online tool can be accessed at Caltopo

So, looks like this shot is from the summit of chimney rock, looking northeast. The highest peak in on the horizon is Shumont Mtn. The rocky ridge proceeding to the right along the horizon is Rumbling Bald Mtn, while the cliff faces in the foreground are along the side of the ridge between Bald Mtn and Round Top Mtn.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
