^^ I suggested a small tank, because he's living out of an SUV and may have space issues. The folks at the gas station in Ridgway are friendly and don't mind filling a small tank.

The odd size ones need to be filled by hand m-f, 9-5, and often the filler will bitch about you buying $10 of propane. Dirtbagging at the level you describe would be doable in a large van with insulation. Cataletic heaters work well.
You can refill the regular sized ones normally. It is cheaper and you can actually get a full tank. The ones you exchange are not actually full.

I built something similar for a small breakfast "nook" in college. It worked shockingly well, for a mid-sized SUV, I think you'd be shocked at how warm this thing keeps you.
