Government Shutdown - impacted areas

J. Albers wrote: ..a response to me about 20 hours ago...Not spending too much time on this as it is pretty far back in this thread now. At no point in either of these threads did I disparage the actual workers, or how efficiently they operate. How well a person goes about his business is a personal choice everyone makes; and everyone has a boss who evaluates how well that person performs and whether or not to reward that person; in both private and public sector occupations. Now, the Federal system itself is vastly (need a much stronger word) wasteful. On the micro level that I deal with (occasional Federal contract work), I will quickly run through just a few highlights of the differences bewtween them and private-equity clients. One: specifications. A book that legaly describes exactly what it is I am doing. Most big private sector (and even local government jobs like schools) have 2 spec books that average 1-1/2" thick. They are 100% thorough or there'd be lawsuits. A Fed job's spec books often are often at least 4 volume's at 3" thick per book. Crammed with redundancies and contradicting requirements. As an estimator, I will factor a multiplier of 1.4 on top of industry standard labor hours just b/c of that alone. Then there is paper compliance for shit like payroll and workman's comp. It requires 4-5 times the amount of time than in the private sector. And then, if it's a Corps of Engineer's job; RUN!!! Its not you personally, and I'm sorry I came off as usual as being a dick. I'm ranting about how fucked we have made ourselves. That you are a contractor I assume and not one of the regular employees who have been gifted an unexpected paid vacation; I am sorry. I was more severe than I needed to be b/c of your Keynesian affection. Its like someone telling me how awesome meth is, I feel compelled to try and help change course and I get a little aggressive. We really do need some rehab centers for those afflicted with the notion government creates jobs. We really do have a common enemy, its so frustrating that so few see it and want action taken. Its the Fed Reserve combined with the monstrosity of what K Street is. Only the Libertarians seek to at a minimum reform how that horrible system works and stop the daily cornholing we are all receiving. Keyenes |

Mike Lane wrote: Its still operating at 83% and the Fed is still printing money as fast as it can. The NSA data center is still using a medium sized city's worth of power gathering every bit of data ever generated, the IRS is still going to (or have already) hire a few thousand more agents specifically to comb through your personal files in the name of ACA compliance. Foreign aid is still flowing back around to ourselves in the form of defense contractor corporate welfare, and the Fed connected crony capitalists are probably actually increasing their margins somehow through this as you don't make $billions per year wiothout being extremely shrewd. Not to take away from your points Mike, but the data center isn't functional yet. Problems arise when you figure in the low-bid factor. Electrical meltdowns and cooling problems are delaying the start up. According to the article, the govt. will not purchase this center if not fully functional. boston.com/business/technol… Could turn out to be a big waste of taxpayer's money. |

Rather I think you are one of the few people in this forum that are making rational, well-thought out posts. My comment was mostly directed at the crowd in here that is spewing brain dead, anger filled garbage towards the government and Obama. Its hard to take anything they have to say seriously. Anyway, back to work despite the fact that I can't get to my office!! Despite the fact that we come from opposite ends of the spectrum, it would appear that we share some similar takes on what needs fixing. For example, it is hard to see K Street as anything other than legalized bribery. I would say that the government does have a role in creating jobs in some sense. That is, a well functioning government is there to make conditions favorable for job growth (e.g. its hard to run a business without roads to deliver goods etc, right?) Anyway, have a good one. |

He said the company was planning to submit an application to package its autumn seasonal Hairy Eyeball in 22-ounce bottles instead of 12-ounce bottles but can't move forward." "Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee has applications pending for new packaging of its IBA dark ale..." A perfect but small example of power/part of government that NEVER should have existed in the first place. And if it were not there, it couldn't be closed and there would be no problem. |

D.Buffum wrote:If the Speaker of the House would allow the House to vote on the Senate bill, this whole shutdown would not have happened. Because the speaker is sticking with the "Hastert Rule," he's literally allowing 1/4 of the representatives prevent the other 3/4 from getting on with business. There are 432 filled seats in the HOR. 232 of them are Republican seats. 200 are Democrats. The speaker is requiring "a majority of the majority" -- at least 116 republicans, 26% of the HOR -- to support the bill before he will allow it to be voted on. There are at least 50 Republicans who would vote for the Senate Bill to fund the Federal Government, plus the 200 Democrats -- i.e. a majority of the HOR. But since the number of Republicans are fewer than 116, the speaker will not schedule the bill for a vote.
