I'm planning a January vacation from SE Alaska, and am hoping to do an overnight trip to Mt. Charleston. I have never made that trip and am wondering what gear to bring. I'd like to bring snowshoes and maybe crampons. How cold can it get, and what should my bag be rated to? Any suggestion for interesting areas to go? Thank You Much
Weather: You will most likely be looking at lows in the single digits to teens and highs in the 20s-30s. Last year we had a very cold weekend on the mountain (happened to doing an overnight to the summit that weekend). Lows were -12, temps in my tent were 4degs, but these were low temps for the season. I would bring a 0 degree bag for comfort.
Gear: Depends on the route. If the south loop trail is open (area may be closed due to summer fire, though you could still easily go up that route (just won't be able to park there)). Anyway, if you take the south loop, no need for crampons, just snowshoes. If you up over big falls, you will need crampons, and you could probably do it as a day trip with an alpine start. There are other approaches from the Lee Canyon side as well, you should bring crampons for those approaches as well.
Thank You Matthysj for the great info. I'm sure once I get up there and spend some time I'll get the "big picture". I've been coming to Vegas every winter for the last 10 years. The beauty of the area is the best kept secret. When I tell people I'm going, they can't understand what I see here. I don't try to explain,,,,,they wouldn't get it anyway.
