I enjoyed it the first year, and was quite disappointed the second time, with the very late late arrival of the 'coupon' book. Left us with just weeks to use most of them, post season. There were sponsors who didn't even change the expiration date from previous year, thus coupon already no good. So I'll pass on it this time,,,,sometimes you just can't stretch out a good thing..original purpose to celebrate the centennial year of 2011 for DL. Those who made effort that first year deserve the credit for getting on board right away.

To address Woodchuck's concerns from last year.

The coupons all expired at the end of the year. Your registration form was received at Boulders on 11-1-2012. This is why we wanted to close registration on 10-31, but decided to leave it open until the end of November because we had people that wanted to sign up still. This is why we've tried so hard to get people to sign up early, rather than waiting for the end.

There was one coupon that the expiration date did not get updated, that being for Wildside in Baraboo. That was not their mistake, but ours. We missed it when proofreading. We noticed the mistake right after printing and contacted them about it. They said not to worry and they would accept them until the end of the year. We made sure to let people know this mistake was in the booklet, but the coupon would be honored by Wildside.

Much of the proceeds from the challenge go to Friends of Devil's Lake. Am I right Carl? That's always been one of my over riding reasons for paying and doing the challenge, and for the nice T-shirt, and the cool locking carabiner with the nice Challenge etch if you climb the required number of TR's, leads, and/or boulder problems. The Challenge offers up a great incentive to climb a lot at DLSTP. My only complaint is that I climbed too much only at DLSTP.

All of the proceeds go to Friends of Devils Lake. The first year we had 25 participants and raised $500. Last year we had 50 participants and raised $1150.

We've received a lot of positive feedback from this event, not only from participants and sponsors, but last week we accepted an award for "Team Effort of the Year" from the Wisconsin Union Directorate, or WUD. In addition, Doug Hemken, one of our organizers and a long-time member of Hoofers, has been given a position on the Board of Directors for FoDL. He has told me that he feels that opportunity is largely because of this event.

It's taken us a little longer to get this year's event running because we've completely changed the way finances are handled. These changes give us tax exempt status on our purchases, leaving more money to donate. It also allows us to use the WUD credit card, which will allow us to buy all our shirts upfront and get a great price break from the increased quantity, also leaving more money to donate.

We've also got other improvements lined up, and we'll have all the details squared away within the next couple weeks.

We’ve got the coupon booklet finalized, the front of the shirt finished, the back of the shirt will be ready in a couple days. What is more important is that we will begin taking signups this weekend in person, and expect to have the website registration go live in the middle of next week.

All participants receive:
• Event t-shirt
• Coupon booklet
• Entry into a raffle with lots of sweet raffle prizes
• A free night of climbing at Boulders for our end of year awards. This includes free pizza from Glass Nickel Pizza Company
• After party at Karben4 Brewery, with super-sweet brewery tour from Ryan, their brewer. I’ve been on a lot of brewery tours, and Ryan does a great job with his tours. Must be 21 to go to the after party.
• New this year, we will be having a party in the fall with free camping near DL. It will be the same location as the annual Wisconsin Climbers’ Party. There will be free beer supplied by Karben4 Brewery (must be 21 to drink).
• Satisfaction of knowing you helped Friends of Devils Lake keep the park beautiful and functional.

We’ve also got a couple more goodies that we’re working on, but can’t mention yet because the details haven’t been finalized. A few of the organizers will be at the mustard pull on Saturday, as well as Mike’s party on Saturday night. We can't write down credit card numbers, so if you're hoping to sign up this weekend, bring cash or the checkbook. It's $35 minimum donation to participate. Of course, any extra that you donate goes straight to FoDL.

Online signup is now available for the 2013 Devils Lake Century Climbing Challenge. We have also started taking paper signups in person, both at the UW-Madison Outdoor Programs Office and in person with event organizers.

On top of all the great stuff we've got listed above, we've also secured a 15% discount for participants on all online purchases with Mike's Mix until 1-31-2014. We've got a few more goodies in the works as well, but can't disclose the specifics yet, as the details haven't been finalized.

As hinted a while back, we’ve arranged some additional goodies for DLCCC participants. The Chicago Mountaineering Club has extended an invitation to all participants to camp on their land the first weekend in August. On top of this, the CMC will be climbing at DL both Saturday and Sunday that weekend and Century Challengers are welcome to join them either (or both) days, which is a great way to tick a bunch of routes.

In addition Hoofer Mountaineering Club is inviting DLCCC participants to join us for a climbing marathons on August 3rd. These marathons are a great way to push yourself mentally and physically, tick a bunch of routes, and come up with an interesting challenge for yourself at the same time. Just like the Century Challenge the marathons have some nominal rules, but in the end you’re free to make up and carry out your own chosen challenge for the day. Examples of previous marathon efforts include a team did a circuit around the Lake, and another team climbed 15 towers in 15 hours. If you’d like more info on participating in the marathon please email HMC at uwmtnrs@gmail.com, or ask here and we’ll be happy to answer your questions.

For many, the best part of the marathon day happens after all the climbing, when we meet up around a campfire with a cold brew, and share our tales of adventure and epic sendage with the rest of the group. This year, camping and story-telling will happen on the property of the Chicago Mountaineering Club, as noted above.

We’ve also solidified the date for the DLCCC Party sponsored by Mike’s Mix and Karben4 Brewing. This includes free camping along the Wisconsin River and free beer from Karben4 Brewery. It will be October 5th and is open to all DLCCC participants, but you must be 21 to drink alcohol. More details on this event will be available as the date approaches.

This is a good a reason to come home as ever! Think the CMC will sponsor a plane ticket for me?

I doubt it. However, if you get the first lead of Magic Mushroom I'm pretty sure your beer expenses will be sponsored for the evening.

Pic reminds me of a party on a fukness ledge above All the Way on Tommys first ascentback in '78-79' era. No barrel of beer, but plenty of cans and 'other' fun stuff to share that day.

Wisconsin (and nearby) climbers!

We have another campout and party coming up, free for participants of the 2013 Century Challenge (and one guest per participant). Also, there's plenty of delicious, free beer, provided by Karben4 Brewing. Must be 21 or older to consume alcohol.

Where: On the Wisconsin River, near Sauk City - facilities provided by Mike's Mix.
When: This Saturday evening + free overnight camping

If you haven't signed up for the Century Challenge, this is a good time to do that, and join the party. Sign-up available at location too.
