I think the OPer was trying to create any easy way to view the aggregate opinion of a post where advice is sought. As opposed to sifting through all the reply posts.

Sound like a decent idea to me (with the caveats aforementioned). Saves one from having to read all the comments from the peanut gallery.

I think Sonvclimbing and Aaron should have date night and or be climbing buddies. This way they can have their own consensus debates in private and rate each other at night while they have tea parties and bond over the ability to come to a consensus, since consensus seems to be so important to them on a worthless climbing, website forum.

Maybe we need a poll so we can see what the consensus is on this thread.

Here are the options for answering my poll of consensus about this very topic.

a) Sacrifice the animal or pet of your choice and post a photo if you think this is the lamest MP idea in history and is a complete waste of time. (preferably cat sacrifices)

b) Ignore this post all together and don't post if you think Hell No! ( I will figure out percentage of approval by taking all registered MP users and seeing how many replied for accuracy of consensus and approval)

c) Post a picture of your favorite alternative sport or hobby when not climbing if you think MP needs to start a poll of approval that would be required of all threads that sonvclimbing is allowed to start on MP before they go live and post in the future.

Solid debate is wonderful and that often happens on MP. But what often reaches ludicrous proportions on MP threads is the bullshit and cheap insults -- polling allows one to circumvent that.

I support polling.

I have never found polls on forums to be in any way useful.

Interesting idea; however, like in politics, polls tend not to be close to scientific. They tend to represent the polar views and not really give a sense of consensus.

Still, if taken in a lighthearted fashion (if possible), it could be "fun". Just don't use such polls to bolster strong arguments to forward one's own positions.

I would like to start a poll.

Is this thread and the "poll box" idea stupid?

I vote yes. What do you say?

I will agree to disagree with this absurd idea.
Whats the consensus?

Some common MP topics that would benefit from a vote: 1.Satisfied with XXXX piece of gear? 2.Best time of year to climb at XXXX location? 3.Best way to prevent XXX injury? 4.Best gear for XXXX? 5.bolt cutting on XXX route? 6.bolt adding on XXX route? 7.my dog peed on my rope should I throw it away?
It could work for these sorts of questions. MP already does something very similar in the route summary with Star Ratings, Suggested Ratings, and Ticks. FYI, you can get a good sense of the best time of year for a particular climb by checking when others have climbed it in the ticks section.

ahah people "voting no" on this proposal...oh the irony!! Particularly those who don't give an explanation.

I'd say it's a great idea..it'll give an opportunity to find a consensus on a number of issues WITHOUT the rampant nonsense that flows every time someone posts something dumb.

sonvclimbing wrote:Very good point aaron. I added only one vote per user. I like the one week or more vote you suggested as well.
Perhaps one vote per ip addressor MAC address or something slightly more effective than simply one vote per user, because anyone could create multiple accounts to mess with results
