Mountain Project needs a poll box

I would like to see a new (create poll) next to (new topic).

The author should be able to create a list of items/topics for MP users to vote on.

When you reply to the post you should be able to VOTE on one or more items/topics, this could be done Anonymously as well, but only one vote per user.

The first page above all else should have a graph or pie chart showing the current results of the poll. The first thing you see when you click.

This will surely stir the pots faster and make clear to everyone what the consensus is.

edit again: consensus doesn't mean shit, make your own judgements, but it may help you to know what the majority of people around you think

thanks for your vote caughtinside this is exactly why I think we need it. Care to explain why not?

Great idea! So many forums are seeking consensus. This would be a way to do this.

Not sure about allowing "unanimous" voters. That could lead to abuse?
What about only allowing users that have been on MP for, say, one week or more vote? That way you eliminate folks signing up for bogus accounts to skew results.

I vote "Fuck No!" I am not here to build consensus, and don't care about how many people share my opinion on issues x, y and z.

Very good point aaron. I added only one vote per user. I like the one week or more vote you suggested as well.

Why?

sonvclimbing · · bolder city · Joined Dec 2008 · Points: 25

NC Rock Climber you probably don't go to foreign established crags and ask for local consensus on local issues you know nothing about either, do you?

Ryan, I ask why not?

Opinions from an aggregate of already anonymous avatars with the option of creating junk accounts to bolster one's poll numbers? Solid!!!

I vote that we have this option for this thread only.

Colonel read the sixth reply again please. I think this will definitely hinder junk account voting.

Read what I wrote. Junk accounts. A person gets more than one vote that way. One junk account, one vote. Repeat as necessary. But nobody on the internet would be so pathetic as to do that sort of thing. Would they? Nooooooooo....

I don't see the consensus of a self-selecting population on one of the many climbing websites qualifying as a creditable means of determining an opinion's worth. It seems others don't either.

But thanks for not couching this as a question, you clearly just want what you want regardless of input. Which, of course, has it's own sweet irony.

The "why not" strategy for determining whether or not a new feature should be implemented on a website is terrible. It's better to discuss what such a feature will add to Mountain Project. What's the gain? What's the member "pain" it will be solving? Discussing "why" is most often more valuable than discussing "why not." I'm open to new features and change, but the first thing I though of when I read the OP was..."uh oh, I hope MP doesn't become RC.com"

Why not have a scientific way to determine the consensus in a post? Let numbers tell the story instead of the story getting skewed by the strong opinions of a few users? Some common MP topics that would benefit from a vote:

1.Satisfied with XXXX piece of gear?
2.Best time of year to climb at XXXX location?
3.Best way to prevent XXX injury?
4.Best gear for XXXX?
5.bolt cutting on XXX route?
6.bolt adding on XXX route?
7.my dog peed on my rope should I throw it away?

Colonel who is going to make junk accounts a week prior to a topic or reply to a topic a week later under junk accounts? Maybe we should up the account's considered time frame. I would hope nobody has this much time on their hands and has nothing better to do. This is the internet and we are trying to make the best of it.

Colonel can you credibly take everything you read/see on the internet as an opinions worth and agree with it? I would hope you make your own judgements.

I thank you for your input. I don't want anything, I am just trying to help.

What?

Ryan I totally agree with you.

I would just like to hear what the majority of people have to say without having to be criminalized for what they think "this is why i like anonymously voting", some people say/vote in ways to appease their pears. I also would like to see what the outcome of topics would be without having to read 20 pages of two people bickering between one another. When you see the stats and disagree with the results, this may coax more people into the discussion and lead to better discussions regarding the topic at hand, hence possibly changing the outcome.

Do you mean anonymous or unanimous? Or majority? I'm confused.

Ryan Nevius · · Perchtoldsdorf, AT · Joined Dec 2010 · Points: 1,837

Also, thanks for your explanation of "why." Much better to see that than "why not." ;-)

sonvclimbing · · bolder city · Joined Dec 2008 · Points: 25

Thanks I meant anonimously. Just a few beers in now but I think I fixed it.

3 martinis in tonite, so bear with me. What is the 'problem' you are trying to correct?
