Ninja's in Yosemite!?

Calaveras Dome has some steep wall routes which have seen few ascents. Shorter than the Nose but much harder. Go for it!

Here's what you should do: wait two weeks for the next full moon. If the shutdown is still going on, try freeing the Nose in one night, wearing black, with no headlamps. Even if you get fined, at least people will think you are way ninja. Bonus points if you attempt to hide in the shadows when confronted by the Park Service. Also, before you do this, you should paint all of your valuable gear flat black. Good luck not losing anything!

Grog - welcome to the forums. You get some good advice mixed with plenty of flaming. Don't take it personally, everyone comes in with different perspectives and different styles. Your response was a good one. So were all the others

Now just post a pic of you in your ninja outfit so we can see how it fits...

Welcome to the world of Forums. 90% garbage, noise, and wasted space, 10% useful and relevant info.

I would recommend the Needles (dare I say better free climbing cracks than Yos) Whitney Portal, Lake Tahoe areas, I've heard Shuteye is awesome, One of the Westside domes, or anywhere on the Eastern Sierra which is loaded for about 150 miles.

Go somewhere else, have fun, the Nose isn't going anywhere.

I don't see the point in doing some bandit climbing in YOS. For what? The pleasure of doing a trade route when no one is around? Go do it in winter. For all the trouble of getting into the park & not being seen you might as well just go somewhere else.

Except for Boot Flake, maybe ;-)

It would be a good time for them to allow a team in to do some long needed trundling.

Crap.
I just realized the worst thing about this shutdown - its forcing people to NOT climb in Yosemite. If they realize how many other great options there are, those could get more crowded.

Please remember: its all choss once you leave the Valley.

Probably safest to just wait at the gate until it reopens.

I don't think the climbing ranger Ben Doyer would appreciate that. Also, if you attempt to climb you would be hurting the climbing reputation in the Valley. LEO's are constantly near the nose and you would be caught.

Ninja don't need gear, so no problem

There are "ninja" climbers in the valley right now. They don't have ropes and they won't be caught. You are not going to climb the nose during the shut down. You're just a poser spraying on a climbing forum because you're bored. Nice troll though.

Actually, they do. Did you see GI-Joe? I distinctly recall one of the ninjas placing a #3 Camalot.

I'm one old dude who thinks your idea sounds like a fun challenge - can you be stealthy enough to pull it off? You'll never know 'till you try, but it is worth a potential hefty fine? Only you can answer that.

Practically, I think The Nose would be too exposed to the valley proper for you to go unnoticed by the law, so I'd consider another route that would provide better cover from the view sheds.

Morally and ethically, you are fine in my book. Not much different than a Shoshone hunting in Arapahoe country - no one 'owns' the Earth, but some people have powerful control over parts of it.

Trip report please!!

I'm a dick for pointing out the obvious? Posting on a public forum about being a ninja climber. Asking adivice about breaking the law. On a public forum? Hmmm sounds like a troll to me. Either you are really gullible or I'm just a big dick. Let's hear the trip report and I'll bow down to your unyielding trust in Internet posters. Btw it is an enjoyable thread.

Read the OP's second post. Pretty subtle and skilled troll if it was. I think they were considering it and just taking the temperature of the community. Nothing to get worked up about. Save the ire for true dipshits.

I'm not worked up at all. Just chilling to some John McLaughlin and doing bong hits.

More power to the kid. I'll happily buy all these young ninjas a pint of Ben & Jerry's if they pull this off.

The rangers are already on edge after having to monitor the trails due to the fires. There were areas you weren't supposed to go to and they had to ride around the park on horse making sure no one went out of bounds.

Now their friends got booted from a consistent paycheck because a few toddlers in congress can't do their jobs correctly.

Also, another poster was correct, they will most likely take your gear if they treat you at all like they treat BASE jumpers.

However, I read an article (maybe even linked from MP?) where a few guys hid from the enforcement and then made a run up the nose, but I think they were okay because they did this right after the closure and there were still people on the wall. They were damn good and freed it in a day.

I also agree with some of the above mentioned posts: please don't ruin our names. We don't get many places to climb in the grand scheme of what's available. There are already a few 50 classic climbs that aren't legally climbable.

Write your congressman and tell him to grow up.

There are workers in the parks, they just aren't getting paid.
Actually, if they're not getting paid it's illegal for them to be there too. However, in general, not every government employee is on furlough and it only takes one person to ruin your day.
