Headed to the Red for the next week.

I've never been there, and I'm curious about how the closures will hamper our trip. Sounds like there's still a decent amount of access?

Virtually nothing to be afraid of down at the RRG. Muir Valley is privately owned, so even if the state of KY decided to close up ALL the Daniel Boone national forest to hikers and climbers, you would have a place to climb. Stay at Miguels, get there early in the week because, you do know, this IS the biggest weekend of the year with the festival going on Fri-Sunday. All I've read is that the national forest camping sites are closed to use. Plenty of Red to climb in all week long, all month if you wish. See you at Mig's,,I'll be there as of Tuesday for about 8 days.

As with many locations across the country, there are smatterings of information. Expect a lot more after this weekend when more climbers and weekend warriors figure things out. There is a lot of gray area. Note how the first posting said that backcountry camping was allowed, but a new posting says it is not.

The roads that the Forest Service are closing include:

  • Tunnel Ridge Road (FS 39)
  • Chimney Top Road (FS 10)
  • Rock Bridge Road (FS 24)
  • Sky Bridge Road (FS 245)
  • Indian Creek Road (FS 9)*

*Affects Lower Gorge. Not clear whether or not Long Wall will be accessible, as the first portion of the road that reaches to the paved portion also leads to multiple residences and is a joint County road. Crags that could be affected include Pebble Beach, Indian Creek, Pistol Ridge, Purple Valley, and many more.

Backcountry camping is essentially prohibited, despite the FS initially saying that it was allowed. Parking is only allowed between 6AM and 10PM.

Other than Lower Gorge, access should be minimally affected. Even if it was, PMRP, Muir, and MFRP would all remain open to the climbing public.

Any updates on what the crowding situation is at Muir and PMRP?

Last I heard, there wasn't enough parking space at Muir to accommodate the extra people (and this was for the weekend before Rocktoberfest).

Muir Valley will be charging $10/person during Rocktoberfest (Friday-Sunday). Maybe that will help with the crowds. Maybe...

Had a fantastic trip!

We headed to Funk Rock to avoid the crowds of the fest.. but so did a handful of other groups, haha. Good times! Prime Directive is an engaging journey of a route.

Saw the Reel Rock, climbed some stellar lines, and met a lot of cool people. Can't wait to get back down there :)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
