Campground at Red Rock closed?

With the govt shutdown we expect the loop road to close and maybe the campground. Hmmmm...... This may pose quite the dilemma for many....... I know there are many AMGA courses/exams coming up and of course loads of us random climbers.......

There is of course the really shitty and unsafe free camping southwest of the area........bring your guns......

Indeed, Calico will be packed. Hiking to the FIrst and Second pullout isnt too bad from there.....but thats mostly sport climbing......

I reckon the hardy trad folk just have to do the hike to Oak Creek and First Creek etc.... Still, camping is a dilemma. The way I see it no camping=few climbers

Greetings Red Rock Canyon Climbers/Visitors,

Your visit to Red Rock may be affected by the current Government Shutdown. Our latest Red Rock/Sloan Field Office staff meeting indicated the following areas will be closed to the general public and permitted operations:

13 Mile Scenic Byway
Campground (vacated within 48 hours)
Red Springs Picnic Area
159 Overlook

However, you may visit other areas of Red Rock Canyon NCA that have not been closed. This includes locations such as Black Velvet Canyon, First Creek via 159, Old Oak Creek via 159, Kraft Mountain, etc.

Most of the Red Rock / Sloan Field Office will be furloughed before noon today. Exceptions to furlough include law enforcement officers (LEOs).

Below is a link to the Government Shutdown contingency plan for the BLM. doi.gov/shutdown/fy2014/upl…

Doesn't this mean though that no activity is permitted in the area, including climbing? If not, what's the hike like to those areas and where would one park? I'm supposed to be heading out that way in 2 weeks to climb and I'm trying to figure out my options. You seem to be knowledgeable about the area.

2 weeks? Don't sweat it. It will likely last 2 days.

Per BLM: climbing seems to be allowed in the hike in areas......suggesting anywhere within the NCA. Howevet, govt managed properties (loop road, camp, picki-nick areas) are closed. So the way I see it: as long as you park somewhere legal you can hoof it anywhere. Thoughts?

The Kraft lot was open this morning when I left at 11, so I'm guessing they'll leave it that way. Red Springs was locked up tight @ 7:30 this morning when we drove by.

There was a ton of people out there when we left.

What about the second parking spot after the main red springs lot but before the Kraft mountain parking? I parked here before when I went to the more remote alternative crag.

Are you talking about the Cannibal parking? There were about 20 cars there when I left.

I doubt that. The last shutdown lasted 4 weeks. I don't see Congress pulling their heads out of their asses any time soon.

We climbed in Black Corridor and on Great Red Book today, Day 1 of the shutdown. We had the place to ourselves, no other climbers were out at the Second Pullout areas. I could get used to this!

Nice John! Juniper and Pine Creek would be awesome right now, not really that far of a hike, perfect weather and I'm guessing almost void of people. I'm wishing that I didn't have to work all week.

I got my downturned shoes, man-pris, ultralight harness, trance bumping iPod boom box, chalk pot, $300 cragging pack, lipstick, and knee pads. Post up those bombdiggety gnargnar Sendios, I'll be enjoying the lack of lines on some classics and wondering why the officer guarding the gate was carrying at least five clips for his handgun, front and center, without pay. I'd have been out there In a onesie with a blender full of boat drinks, badge pinned to my back flap. Perhaps this is why I never took the civil service exam....

I don't know what the hell I just read. But I like it.

their was a million people climbing in black velvet canyon yesterday, and as we left some foreign people we talked to were just laughing at the situation and said they were just going to camp out their.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
