I am planning on heading down to yosemite tomorrow, but are the doors even gonna be open? Anyone know what would happen in the park if congress let's the government shut down? Will they close the roads? or just no rangers and services?

I actually think they go in, take all the rocks out, and put them into storage. They'll pull them out once the shutdown ends.

Sadly this is a real question for all the bay area folks.

In a nut shell all parks will be closed. Current visitors will have time to leave but no new visitors. You may still be able to get into a park via driving through but I would not count on it.

Last time gov shut down, mid-90's, 7 million people were turned away from national parks, including Yosemite:

The only NP that didn't shut down at that time was the Grand Canyon, and that was b/c Arizona decided to foot the bill.

Better make alternate plans, just in case.

Or skydive in with a rack, a rope, and a partner.

Yosemite will be entirely closed, with current visitors allowed time to leave and no future visitors allowed in. The roads in will close for the safety of the park without government employees (park service, fire, etc.) to supervise. A quick google search will confirm all of this.

Yes, many to most National Parks and monuments will lock their gates and not admit paying visitors,,,you know, the ones with cash on hand that could SOLVE part of the cash flow problem. Go figure...

No crowds, no rangers to hassle you - sounds pretty ideal if you're already there!

You'll know at midnight. But you should probably plan on climbing some backcountry Sierra stuff on state lands

Did you just climb out from under a rock? Discussions about the impact have been on going for over a week. Impacts not just regarding the NPS but other agencies. Pick up a newspaper, watch the news, or cruise the net.

This applies to national forests and BLM lands too. National Forests will not close in the same way, but anything requiring USFS employees to operate or maintain will be closed. If you are planning on going to a campground or picnic area that is operated by the USFS or BLM you may want to double check. Bathrooms and other facilities will also likely be closed.

Made me chuckle because it's true and a sad commentary on some of the uninformed public.

I can't think of any NFS climbing areas that won't allow access for climbing. The parks are the areas that typically have gates that control access.

Wish I was in the valley right now and had a week or so. Would be an incredible time to do a wall, slowly. No fat, middle age guys on harleys, no traffic at all, no leos.

And on the anniversary of the park...

I was in JTNP when during the last shutdown during the Clinton administration. The rangers actually came and kicked us out, we ended up climbing at some scabby crags just outside south end of the park.

The Valley & other national parks will not allow for entrance and will be actively facilitating the removal of those already in the park. Even non essential staff will not be admitted, those with those with housing in the valley can stay but that's about it. There will be no services by either Park employees or DNC concession.

This coming from a horrible summer season due to the Rim fire. Visitors bring tips, spend money, hire guides and spend funds at surrounding towns. Friends rely on this income to survive the slower winter season. Worse yet, even they won't be allowed in to climb or enjoy the Park. Shut-down = shut-down.

Some of us were wondering what they'll do with parties up on El Cap... "Come down right now!" through a bullhorn isn't going to work.... If I had a little extra water I'd slow right down, if that were possible; I'm pretty slow to begin with, but why not enjoy the relative silence -- no cars, for starters. Like Zion... that one in Utah.

You need to change that picture to one of those asshole tea party republicans.
Those are the ones causing all this chaos, and stalling our economy!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
