Hopefully this won't hurt the plan to open up the park to climbing. More importantly, hopefully what he used as an anchor will be revealed sometime. And most importantly, hopefully this won't happen again.
They say "climber" in the articles, but it sure sounds like he was rappelling it, to me. He'd been climbing only twice before, so it's highly unlikely that he managed to rope-solo all the way to the top before having an accident. My guess is that he chose a crappy anchor (poorly-placed, shiny gear?) and pulled it.
OR, he was trying to set up a solo TR and lowered himself with the rope through webbing.
