Looks like beta to me.

How is that different than looking up the route in a guidebook or on your MP app.

I'm not saying it is or isn't. I am asking you where you draw the line. Does knowing where the route goes or where it starts negate the onsite for you?

What if there is an inobvious traverse on the 5th pitch that you never would have worked out without hints online to look for it? Is it still an onsight?

Does an onsite have to be the same as an FA except people have been there before?

For me, it's an onsite if you have never climbed it before and you haven't gotten specific beta on how to execute the moves. Route finding, gear beta (within reason), and descent beta all are acceptable for an onsite. What do I know though, I'm a gym n00b that has never been outside.

Onsite = first ascent. Everyone else is second.

If you have beta, it's a flash, if you know nothing except the route name and grade (possibly some minor gear recommendations ) then it's an onsight, it's never something that's gotten me riled up, but words have meanings, and there is a difference in "Flash" and "Onsight"

Climbing is about self accomplishment . I pretty sure that no one but you even cares how you completed a given climb. Climb hard climb safe an have a blast.

Just Wait a bit for the projectable version that you shine on the route and it gives you running beta and tells you what gear to place and where --

".75 C4 right here! -->"

Imagine yourself standing near sky pond and scanning the bowl just like that star map/constellation app thingy. My app gives you all the routes, grades, current weather, and your own fitness, VO2 Max, BP and heartrate , etc then it tells you what routes are "green" for you to do that day.

Walk up, set it down on a rock and project your climb and protection needs and info right on the route itself. Even calls 911 for you should you be unable to suss out the moves.

You know you want it. Patent pending...

(WARNING: This app is not Marmot proof)

Thanks for telling me where to skip to in that video, so I didn't waste any additional time on that. Much appreciated.

The post was not an ACTUAL debate of onsight ethic. That rather an interesting feature on technology that pertains to our obsession. Read between the lines my brethren.

Mark P. Can you get the app to project a holographic image of me climbing, of course in excellent form, then I can quit working out so hard and enjoy my late 50's, recovery time seems to be on an exponential path these days and is a real bitch some days!

It would still be an onsight if done holographically right?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
