Where is it dry?

Chad Volk wrote:I thought about climbing in the Flatirons tomorrow too but given the amount of rain we've had I'm a little concerned about breaking holds. We got more rain in 24 hours than the previous record for the month of September so it's likely that the rock is still wet and weakened. I also think there might be better uses for my time around Boulder tomorrow than going climbing.
I don't think there's any reason to avoid the Flatirons if they are wet. I'm pretty sure the rock is not porous. I'd be interested in hearing some educated opinions however.

If you know someone in Boulder that needs a hand, feel free to help out if you want.

But there is ALWAYS a better use of one's time than climbing, if you insist on looking at it that way.

As of this morning-
Clear Creek- Highlander about half wet but climbable.
Lots of folks on Highwire.
River Wall wet.
Heard that Wall of the 90s was totally seeping.
Twitch soaked. Sonic Youth some seeps.
Red Wall dry.
Didn't notice Little Eiger.
Of course, it's raining right now...

it is currently hailing and raining cats, dogs, and horses down in Centennial... Funnel clouds have been spotted in Aurora. Probably best to stay home with a six pack and watch some climbing videos.

Except for the fact that the city explicitly asked people not to travel to Boulder unless they have to. Every town is asking people to limit travel while they assess road damage, rescue those that need it and look for those missing.

Additionally the mayor of Boulder has made a declaration that it is illegal to be on any city open space due to the general danger, which includes the Flatirons. It's also illegal to kayak or tube in any of the water areas.

I'd say that's a pretty good reason to stay away from Boulder. Be safe out there everybody!!!

PS...just as a side note. I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't want to be in any of the canyons right now. Am I the only one that doesn't want to get hit with rocks or mud? I'm kinda surprised folks are getting out today with all the dangers. I have to say it's pretty risky.

Does the mayor have that legal power? Seriously?

Or at least spend no cash there...

I can see why they don't want people here to recreate at the moment.
Choppers are still out flying, clean up in streets is going on, as well as in
parking areas at shopping. Mud slicks all over. Boulder Ski Deals was moving stuff out, and moving giant fans in, McGukins was spared somehow.

I don't know Scott, I've had to drive around a good part of the city the last couple of days and it doesn't seem that bad. Pearl Street is open as are most businesses in town. Folks can follow Boulder's suggestions if they like. I might take such a suggestion from Longmont more seriously. They seem to have taken a worse hit.

As for Open Space, I guess closing for the weekend might make sense, but I fear this will just turn into another "let's keep people off open space indefinitely" debacle, kind of like the closure of Boulder Falls.

Highlander in Clear Creek seemed plenty safe today. But maybe I have low standards.

I was one of a few groups at High Wire Crag in CCC today. Got to the crag around 7:15 and quite a few of the climbs were wet. We climbed what was dry and by the time we left, around 1:30, most of the climbs were perfectly dry. Large roof features were still seeping, but we managed to get 8 or so pitches of dry climbing in!

On a different note, we were told by another party that a climber just down canyon had been hit by rockfall. We saw the ambulance come and go but have no idea as to any other details. Helmets may be a good idea, even for sport climbing, for the next few weeks...

We arrived to a backup on I70 but managed to get around, do our shopping, and ended up in Grand Junction. Heading to Unawee for the next couple days then will work our way back East. Thanks for the info here and best wishes on a speedy cleanup.

Unaweep was awesome and dry fwiw. Afternoon storms stayed northwest mostly. just sprinkles. Doesn't sound like boulder is any better before we left. Crazy!

Dry? Bouldering in Death Valley is my best guess.

I'm displaced from Eldorado Springs and up in Nederland with fam. Stay off the roads, don't go trying to find where you can climb, up here and places around, you'll be turned around by the police if you're not a resident. Roads need to stay clear for emergency access.

Most of clear Creek is pretty dry, some seeps and definitely some geologic displacement. Be careful out there, but it sounds like south platte, turkey rocks and eleven mile might be good options.

Anyone know if shelf rd is all good yet after the big rains?

Just returned from there. You're good to go. Access roads are in good shape (one big bump up to the Bank area). Only spotted two wet spots on bolted climbs. Some things are a bit sandy from runoff, but nothing to keep you from enjoying them.

Climbed Vedauwoo yesterday. It's nice there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
