So I was watching a nice 30 minute gopro video on the chief & as the gentleman is jamming in a hand below a piece f'in with the rope in the way I couldnt help thinking how it would be an advantage to use live view on your phone as a way to better belay... anyone got any experience with said app?

Don't know if they fixed it in new version of the app (or if it's fixable at all), but there used to be a 1-2 second lag a few months ago.

so while not perfect at this point wouldnt anyone see this as a possible area for climbing to improve? Im thinking like 5.13-5.14 trad where all gear placed is micro-cams & nuts... where half the time a piece gets pulled... if you could see that fall coming, or know how they placed that last piece your dynamic belay could be that much better! Letting your partner eat up 10m of rope when that last piece looked bomber & you coulda just let him slide 3m... just idle thought i suppose.

Not seeing the advantage here. Sort of like texting and driving with the same disastrous consequences. Doesn't it require 2 attentive hands to belay? I realize you're thinking out of the box here, but how confident with the send can you be with your belayer f@cking with his phone? Unless you cross bred with an octopus or a chimpanzee. ...

I was thinking more along the line of a HUD style screen something like google glass or better recon instruments new deal. Just a thought considering how high tech things are getting & climbing becoming more mainstream...

It seems analogous of driving by using your GoPro and iPhone as opposed to just looking through the windshield. The best bet is to just watch the climber directly.

my point is when you cant see the climber... & again something better than staring at your phone in your hand, obviously thats a bit of a detractor

Well it is sort of an irrelevant topic regardless because the lag time is so high that the climber will be at the end of the rope before your phone shows him falling. It is a cool idea but the app just is not functional enough to allow you to do what you want to do with it.

When technology advances, maybe we'll be able to purchase Mission Impossible style Oakleys that provide real time AV feedback on the lens in the upper corner? This would be the safest way to send.
