Summer climbing near Lake City, CO?

My family and I will be camping near Lake City (south of town, close to Sherman) over Labor Day weekend, and while I've found some decent beta on Ice / Mixed, I have yet to find anything for summer climbing. My kids are small, and my wife is just starting, so I'm specifically looking for some easy stuff, 5.8, where I can set a top rope and belay the family for a few hours. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks much in advance!

I was out there early this month. It is BEAUTIFUL. There is plenty of rock, but I didn't find any "crags" -- certainly no bolts. Mostly just mixed/ice like you said, and 14er type stuff.

I also didn't look super hard as we were hitting ouray and rifle on the way back.

there is a great climbing area in Ouray which is just over engineer pass from lake city, look up Ouray cragging on this site.

As Cor suggested, check out God's Crag under the Gunnison section of this site. It might not have what you are looking for though.

God's Crag has like three 5.9's and everything else is harder through 5.13

Thanks for all your comments. Trip was awesome, but was skunked on the rock. Only crag close to town was between Williams Creek and Mill Creek campgrounds, on the side of the road, and would have been perfect if my 100m rope were 125m long. Doh! Looks like a local Christian camp had set up a number of bolts at the top of the route, but alas, my rope was too short. Kids and wife were very bummed, as was I.

Don't let anyone tell you length doesn't matter!

100-meter rope? where? I'd buy one!

I have a 100m rope I would sell if anyone is interested. 9.1 Beal Joker. Never used.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
