I don't think I've ever heard a crag dog owner(or any other dog owner) apologize for their dog's actions. It's always some excuse. "You surprised him...", "He's just excited..."

must be a slow week on 'ethical' debates, the players are at each others throats over a bad dog/owner story.

Bringing an uncontrollable hound to the crag endangering others is an ethical debate.

Glad you weren't more seriously hurt r.c

You should always yell "ROCK" - doesn't matter if it is a Dog, cat or giraffe.

That would be a great route name. "Falling dog"

but I don't have a dog in this fight so...

I can't stand the dog worshipping cult in the climbing world. I don't love your dog. I don't want it sniffing me, standing on my rope, or falling on me from the freakin wall! Your dog does not have a certain unalienable right to run all over the crag. Put that thing on a leash!

There aren't any good dogs, just some that have been properly trained by good owners.

^+1. poorly behaved kids at the crag suck too, difference is you can't kick them in the throat without getting arrested.

I was belaying next to a stream the other day. A nice couple with a nice wet dog came by. I felt like "Cleveland" in the bathtub as the I saw the dog think about shaking, get closer, get wetter, no no no no no no no no

Covered in smelly dog.

Go ahead and leash me. Ill get my revenge by pooping in the trail and barking every time my master climbs!!!

Sorry Price, not all of us are on a trustfund and travel around all year livin' the dream with our well-behaved dogs.

Most of us working stiffs like to have a stress-free day on our days off. Crags are not full of frolicking, happy, well-behaved dogs, unicorns or rainbows.

I find your defense of helpless animals endearing. Every think that violence is how animals communicate? Ever seen a wolk take down an unrulely pup? You are projecting your human values onto dogs.

'ohhhh.... bad doggie... don't ever do that again, never ever.' isnt a language they understand, especially if they are endangering a climber while climbing.

And I haven't had to kick dogs lately, screaming at them and the owner usually gets the message across.

Can we maybe just get an entire Forum devoted to the dog debate? Gear, General, Lost and Found, For Sale, Regional, Dogs, Overpriced Gunks Daypasses, Site Help. I really think we'd have enough new content to keep it fresh.

I usually don't give a shit whether a dog is at the crag or not, until it starts doing something stupid or dangerous. I personally leave my dog at home when climbing, unless I'm on a road trip where I'm forced to bring her along. She gets bored at the crags and usually just sleeps in the shade anyhow, so I figure I might as well just let her do that at home...

Voice / sight rules just lend themselves to bad owners becoming worse owners. All dogs should be on a leash or left at home.

Actually it doesn't. Animals are considered property and are to be controlled by owners. You are liable for anything your dog does as opposed to other people who are only liable for their own actions. Not to mention most parks have leash laws.

So, was the dog okay? lol. I like the OP's writing, "the dog was robustly climbing boulders." Sounds cute!

haha like bearbreeder says, and it'd be funny if someone yelled "DAAAWWWG!" Maybe the owners should teach the dog to scooby-doo it out, if he is going to be doing more free-soloing.

I'm not a fan of barking dogs at crags (hurts my ears), but this one seemed to have just lost his footing, he didn't mean any harm.

S.price,

Thanks for explaining the details of your trust fund. I was very interested.

Can you elaborate on some of your dog training philosophy? How exactly do you "handle" those "hounds?" Does it work on your employees?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
