So I've gotten my dad into climbing. He really enjoys it, and has begun following me on Trad lines now. He wants to get more into it, get his own gear, etc. Right now he rents a pair of basic Madrock shoes. They work for him for now. He wants his own shoes though, and with his birthday coming up, I'm going to get him a pair. One problem, he has really wide flat feet. He always has an issue shoe shopping because of the width of his feet. I'm going to take him to REI to try some pairs on first as well, but any recommendations on shoes for wide feet? He understands he's not going to be super comfortable in a pair of climbing shoes, but he wants me to take him up some multi-pitch next year so they need to at least be bearable on a climb.

Might still be able to find a pair of Scarpa Force climbing shoes which take a wide foot very well! This was my go-to shoe at my shop for anyone that said anything about having a wide foot. Plus, the last is not radical, the heel cup is easy to fill (sans aggressive slingshot rand), the toe box is surprisingly comfortable even with curled toes, aaaaaand they have been replaced by the new "Force X", so you can likely find them for cheap!

I have wide feet and like the katana laces. I've blown out a couple different pairs (scarpa, 5.10) that weren't wide enough before.

Ive got very wide feet, (I've blown out pinky toe holes in almost every pair of street shoes ive ever owned) and Scarpa shoes have definitely been the best for me. they do tend to lose the downturn pretty quickly but for wide feet i cant recommend them enough

I have wide feet and I use Evolv Defys and Evolv Bandits and don't have any issues with them. For slab and/or multipich I prefer the defys.

katanas lace and velcro are known for a wide toe box as are the evolve defys, 5.10 coyotes VCS ... and many beginner shoes ultimately his feet will determine what fits

Five Ten's new Stoneland VCS seem to be a good bet for me (Hobbit-footed person). Size them up about a full size above street shoe, give or take of course.

What size foot? Didn't see it in any of the posts. I've got some overly stretched out , very wide size 12+ all leather Boreals. They've still got some life in them for a new climber. Let me know, or PM me.
