Um, you said "Finally, anyone using a moniker of "phd motherfuckers" is highly unlikely to be selected as an admin."

That's pretty hard to misunderstand. It means that in your opinion, camhead shouldn't be an admin. It also makes it sound like you're personally biased against him, and that's coloring your viewpoint. Why else would you vote against Camhead just because some other poster used the F word in a post about him?

Okay, Gabe, I understand what you took from my words, but that isn't what I meant...I'll try to parse this out explicitly. Personally, I'd rather do other things than get misunderstood yet again for trying to help out on this tiny bit of data request for "Please change campground info for the new river gorge," but perhaps this may help. Forum posts often suck for getting out clear communication that is a bit more complicated.

Ryan wrote: "So basically what you are saying is that it is OK for someone to go and add a bunch of routes to a database, but the organisation and quality of the submissions isn't important?"

No. That missed my point.

"If the idea behind Mountain Project is to keep people from buying guidebooks, then I want nothing to do with it."

No. That is exactly contrary to what I had intended. My fault for not being more explicit, but NO!

"Guidebook authors (e.g. Mike Williams) go to great lengths to put together such amazing books and they are only trying to recoup the money they've spent. And if the idea of this site IS to keep people from having to buy books, posting current and relevant camping information is even more important."

Historically speaking and hearing it from key folks, the core of the website is the route database. It has NOTHING to do with keeping folks from buying guidebooks! I love guidebooks. I wholeheartedly support folks buying guidebooks and so do the site owners and most if not all the admins here.

"I always thought the idea of Mountain Project was to give people a broader sense of what is actually out there to climb. The information given should be informative and organised in a way that offers users options and advice. Personally, I want a FULL description of all guidebooks to areas as big as the NRG - that way I can make an educated decision where to spend my money and who to support. Same goes for camping and local businesses."

Historically, this website along with all the other climbingxxx.com sister sites had many, many ideas about what it was for depending on exactly who you asked. Some focus on the routes, some focus on the forums, some focus on the photos (huge props to the late Blitzo), some focus on posting their FAs, some focused on the points and ranks (?), some focus on giving or receiving beta for areas they don't know, some focus on giving or receiving beta for areas they do know, some like to needle other folks....

"Submissions should be organised in a way that helps potential visitors choose where to spend their money, which ultimately supports the local climbing areas, guidebook authors, campground owners, etc. That's progress and it's something I'd like to be a part of. See the Thailand section if you want an idea of what I am talking about. I can't take credit for much of it, but I try to make sure it is relatively current."

No problem with Ryan having his own purpose for the website, but it isn't a uniform idea. If you see some of the extremely brief entries, you get the point that this concept isn't shared throughout the MP.com community.

"camhead has climbed at the New as much as anyone I know and apparently is now living there (when did that happen dude? Awesome btw!). He's offered several times to take on quite a large job. I don't understand why people are making excuses. No one is saying the current guy is doing anything wrong.

Shit, all I had to do to become an admin was ask and I'm barely half as smart and dedicated to climbing as camhead."

No real comment on this. I don't know camhead or even his real name. I don't really have an opinion about camhead right now. I looked at his profile on MP.com and didn't glean too much...other than he did not appear to be a troll as someone in a different thread suggested. I don't get a vote anyway.

Separately, Chris mentioned "...find someone new. le camhead, phd motherfuckers." I did not understand camhead = phd motherfuckers. What I got from that terse bit was that these were 2 separate monikers that 2 different folks used. FWIW, I asked my wife about the idea that someone using that moniker be an admin. She was truly taken aback that anyone would use that.

On that note, let's let camhead (whoever you are) and Ladd sort this out. I'd like to bow out of this discussion, unless I screwed up something else in my texts. I've spent a bit of my time trying to help out with the GPS location function thing. Maybe everyone can help with that, too. Apologies and cheers!

I by no way meant to offend someone, but if I did then oh well it's the internet. If you are ever in the area of the NRG and care to climb let me or camhead know and we will gladly keep you laughing with all of our other monikers.

Glad to see this is all getting taken care of and stoked for any new changes that are happening with mountain project.

On a side note, if you are worried about people cursing in here and it offending some of your audience then maybe a curse word filter/scrubber should be talked about. I would be happy to write one for you guys if needed.

Climb On!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
