Just moved to SLC! Going to the Uintas tomorrow on the good faith of the information on MountainProject. Unless, anyone has a guidebook we could borrow? Or, key information such as a heads up on any changed information? That would be greatly appreciated! Leaving early saturday am, the August 24, coming back the next day. We will be very careful with your guidebook, I promise! :)
Also, we have a dog that needs to come with, are there any areas we should avoid? Ruth Lake area looked like a steep talus field to the base, from what I could tell from the photos. Or anywhere that's going to be especially busy on the weekend?
If its peace and quiet your looking for, avoid ruth lake on a weekend. Its usually a junk show... Moosehorn has some sweet climbing, although the approach might be rough on a dog. Also check out cliff lake its a really short approach, and a good days worth of climbing. or even castle lake. Hope this helps
Take a rain jacket; with the current weather pattern it is likely to be wet. Often times the thunder showers will hold off until 2-3 pm, so you can get in a few hours of climbing until the lightning and rain start up. If the weather is good there will be climbers at Ruth Lake or the Stone Garden on the weekend, and it's likely there will be a guidebook around that you can look through. If not, print out a few pages here and the cliffs and routes are pretty easy to figure out once you are there. Ruth Lake would be a good initial destination; it has the most routes, a good mix of easy 9's to moderate 12's, most things are pretty tightly bolted, and there are a few gear lines. Stone Garden has some steeper and harder routes if that is what you are looking for. Dogs seem to do fine at either spot.
Depending on how your dog is, Ruth Lake could be less than ideal- lots of people at times. We went up to the Uintas last weekend and since we had three dogs with our party we went to the Mosquito Wall and were the only ones there.
Thanks everyone! Had a great time at Stone Gardens and Mosquito Wall. It was pretty quiet. Also, we saw three moose in one day! Amazing! I lived in Maine for 10 years and only ever saw 2...
