Hello everybody. Me, my girlfriend, and dog Peanut just moved from new england to SLC. We're quickly learning about dog restrictions in local canyons (BCW, LCW) which is a bit of a bummer, but understandable. Any advise on dog friendly destinations? Also good gear shops around town? I know there's a handful but any help to get our feet on the ground is greatly appreciated. It'd be pretty nice to get out this weekend we're hoping to do some climbing before school starts. Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the area!

Ferguson Canyon. The canyons and hikes up in the Ogden area are dog-friendly. Please pack up your dog's poop. Many people don't and it makes for a repulsive odor while approaching the crags at Ferguson.

Gear shops: definitely check out IME, which is around the corner from REI. In Ogden there's Gear:30.

Mill Creek is the defacto dog canyon with hikes to Dog Lake. It is a pop and pack canyon. Odd days are off leash, even days must be on leash. However, I do not recommend even days because that is when Mtn. bike can use the trail and they come flying down the trail.

Ferguson Canyon is dog friendly as is Deff Smith.

As for Gear shop IME, BD, and REI are good. Kirkham's has some gear.

Oh yeah, the initial are LCC and BCC. Might check the Craggin Classic this week up at Alta.

Local dog friendly crags are Parleys, Neffs, Echo, American Fork, and Maple. I've never climbed in Rock Canyon so maybe one of you Utah valley climbers can speak to that.

I would second checking out the Craggin Classic. at least meet other folks around here and if you work on the trail to Devil's Castle, you have no excuse to get lost there any other time...

On your way up the Canyon Saturday, go do Pentapitch. No dogs, but a good taste of LCC.

If your dog is good around cliffs and such (and there are places where you wouldn't have to worry) but Rock Canyon is good for dogs...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
