What's your deal man, how many times do I have to say do it if you want.

From the angle and perspective the top of Fire in the Sky looks like it is too far from the bridge to be the spot in the original photo.

Doug: no wind, no problem...my flag is wired to stay upright. And yes, I'm afraid that the real spot will be covered by too many trees now. Am hoping there's a somewhat convincing 2nd location to shoot at.

Must be on top of the river side of the Hell/Quarry Wall or the Brig then. I have not been to the top of either of those, but the Brig seems like it would be mostly obscured by trees. Perhaps Mildly Entertaining might be the easiest way to find out if the top of the Quarry formation would be a suitable match for the photo.

Ya Chris's photo looks close but two things I notice... 1 too far from bridge/gap along the shore, and second that in the original photo the subject appears to be more above the water that and and you can see the bend back left in the river...

The dam was built maybe 25-30 years after the original photo, so the upper river is no longer there.

Get er done D.
If a circa 1920 flapper chick wearing chuck taylors while toting the Betsy Ross can do it, surely someone here can!

Why not get women. They're better looking by
far. And if you get the right ones, they
climb harder than men too.

Could it possibly be as far north as the Anthrax wall?

I really appreciate the help you people are providing! If an alternate peak must be chosen, then the photo I'm posting here is the photo to beat. It's too close to the bridge and the elevation is lower (Anthrax Wall?) but I can make it work if I must. I will be back at Petenwell from about 10:00-ish to 11:30 on Sat. (or if weather is dreary on Sat. I can be there on Sun. instead) I can lend the flag out to any takers but I must say this: I can only offer a payment to someone(s) who can provide me with the most useable photo. It's a precision dissolving slide show... so the horizon line, the lady, and the flag need to "line up" fairly closely to the original. I will feel bad if anyone provides me with something I can't quite use, but I would very happily send those persons a copy of the DVD when it's completed (Jan./Feb?) Dropping off my flag at my workplace would be a cinch for anyone heading back to Madison.

My new guess is that the flapper girl was on 30 degree Wall if I'm looking at the map correctly. I think Anthrax can be seen behind her.

Anthrax Wall?

Chris,
How can a guy get a hold of a copy of the Hansen guide?

Matching an angle like this can be frustrating but there is a little trick that will make it much easier.

Print out the original photo and then fold it down so just the bridge, river, and inlet above the bridge are visible. match the folded down picture to the actual terrain if the match looks really close unfold the photo and see if the whole scene is a match.

This can also be applied to two photos as the cropped down version eliminates the camera field of view and just concentrates on angle and perspective.

Here's my shot above Anthrax. I'm happy with everything about it...EXCEPT for the very location itself. I'm quite certain now that the original photo was taken closer to Fire In The Sky. (Bear in mind that the original bridge was downstream some 20 yards)If anyone is up for the challenge of bettering this photo I'd be happy to lend you my flag. I'd hand out a little money just for the attempt, and $100 for anyone who can give me something more "spot on" and more publishable than this:

Anthrax
