From July 14th, 2013. Good run off in the cirque around 3-5pm. Good 24 hour run off below the boulder field. Bugs are not too bad; nobody in the cirque last weekend!

Any updates on LP this weekend? Water?

Water was trickling later in the afternoon as of 7/21. There was still snow in the cirque to melt. There was plenty of water to fill your water bottles if you are coming up from the alpine trail.

Anyone?

No running water in the cirque. A decent amount of snow left as of today. A few small streams flowing from the alpine side.

Can anyone give report on the water situation from the Jacob's Ladder approach? I would think that there would be some water flowing in the forested gully before the boulder field, but it would be really helpful to know for sure.
Also, if there is still plenty of snow in the cirque, is it not melting enough to flow by late afternoon? That's how it was last time I was up there. No flow in the morning, but it started by late afternoon.
Any info before Thursday would be great!!

I was up there a few days ago. The Draper approach was super hot. I highly recommend an early start and to watch out for snakes as we saw a huge rattlesnake. There was water at the first campsite meadow (just above the top of the major hill, where the trail splits for the summit trail) also water in the valley before entering the cirque. Plenty of water flowing if you look in the right places. I didn't see any water in the cirque proper, still a small patch of snow though.

Hope you have a good trip.

Right on. Thanks Brad.

Here is a shot from this weekend showing the current amount of snow up there. Mr. Hummus, there was no running water this weekend due to the temps and lack of direct sun. We too saw a huge rattlesnake but on the Alpine side, watch out!

Was up in Lone Peak this past Sat/Sun. A little water was to be had right before you enter the boulder field. Enough to fill your bottles (i.e. not a tiny trickle). Temps were perfect and there were several climbing parties there that weekend.

Just one small piece of snow. Might be snowmelt at the base of it; we didn't check.

there was still plenty of running water just before the cirque this weekend!

I'm looking for a partner to go up to the cirque for a few days approximately Sunday 8/18 through Wednesday 8/21, dates are slightly flexible. Looking to do stuff like...

mountainproject.com/v/tripl…
and/or

Open to other suggestions as well. I have a rack, rope, and the appropriate experience for these climbs, but I'm visiting from out of town so I'd prefer to go with a local that knows the approach. PM me with some background info and any questions you may have if you're interested. I'll be in SLC by Friday the 16th so we could (should) meet beforehand.

Also I'll be in the Tetons/Winds over the next week so I'll have limited phone/internet but I'll get in touch as soon as I can.

Thanks,
Dave

Hopefully this doesn't come off stupid. What's the nearest water to the cirque? I've heard there is a spring in the upper meadow but that it might not be there this time of year. Any input would be much appreciated!

The water in your pack...

In early August there was still water running in a short section of the stream bed that exits the cirque. You can see how much snow was left at that time in the photos above (hint: not much). You'd be very lucky at this point to find either snow or running water unless maybe you were to follow a significant precip event. One of those IME types may still be going up there.

Other than that, you'd be relying on the upper hamongog spring, which you could base out of for day climbs or refill from on your way up from Alpine.

2nd for Brian; not much up there this time of year.

Not sure what this meadow area is called, but there is a spring in flattish meadow/trees that you encounter after dropping down a bit from the ridge line at the top of Jacob's Ladder/Draper (where scouts usually camp; flows in a channel about 50 yards north of the trail). I've been told it's perennial, but I don't know for certain, especially this year. There's another spring in upper Bear Canyon that intersects the trail and is documented as perennial (I can confirm it was flowing in September a few years ago); this option really only makes sense if you take that trail. Both options are a ways below the cirque, but could be useful for hiking up with empty jugs.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
