Found: Knife (Attention Rope Cutters on Culp)

To: the guy that threatened to cut my rope and kill me on the Culp last Thursday. I found your knife at the base of the route and am willing to sell it back to you for $20. It looks pretty nice and I'd hate for you to miss out on more rope cutting adventures in the future.

I wouldn't consider myself an "expert" climber so usually assume that other people know more than me in the mountains.

At a belay, the climber asked me if he could continue up as my friend was finishing his lead. I agreed, but soon regretted it. He tangled the ropes up and clipped my partner's biners on the pitons. I still had the thought of - "well that must be okay because he must be the more experienced person." I started seconding and had to unclip his biner off our draw and put it on the piton. I had to mess with the rope a few more times for the same reasons.

I tried to be careful, but he started screaming and threatened to kill me if I touched his rope again. He then started yelling about how shitty of climbers we were and how he was going to cut my rope. He also said that we knocked a bunch of rocks down on him which I wasn't aware of but I guess could be true. It's Hallets which is a broken piece of crap and they choose to follow us up.

Fast forward: while retrieving my pack I found a knife. Also, there were some marmots chewing on one of their packs which was satisfying to watch.

I guess that there are douchebags with bad tempers in the mountains just like anywhere else.

Thanks for the knife and like I said - $20 and it's yours.

One more thing - I hope I never see you in the mountains again.

Wait, wait...

I have an idea.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING BELAY KNIFE.

You go on a climb and threaten the other people you run into at the first sign of any stress or aggro behavior. Of course you write a trip report with pictures. Then you send the knife to someone new.

You can also not confront the people that bother you and just pose with the knife in a threatening manner. That's actually cooler. I totally could have cut their rope! Rock raaaaage!

Seems like if you're going to clip another party's protection while passing them, you shouldn't be surprised if they have to unclip your shit to retrieve their own gear. In fact, clipping another leader's pro while leading is putting them in danger...what if you were to fall on and compromise that piton when the original leader was relying on it? Or what if you fell and your draw crossloaded the first leader's draw that was clipped to the pin? Actually, I could see this easily happening on some pins that force your clipping biner into certain orientations.

As a follower in this situation, the only exception I would make is if the second leader that clipped the piton is absolutely relying on it with his/her life and is climbing above it. Out of courtesy I would wait to swap the draws until they got in another piece. Even so, it's alpine climbing and you shouldn't have to give up valuable time waiting for an ass clown to finish up his shenanigans before continuing with your climb.

And threatening to cut another climber's rope is beyond crazy.

What a d-bag. Too bad you guys had to deal with that amongst all the other factors in the alpine. IMO if you're going to try to pass a party you better have your shit together.

Seems like if you were seconding and he was leading you had the upper hand. Perhaps taking a "whipper" on his rope would have shut him up...

Welcome to alpine climbing in Colorado. It is full of slow parties and assholes, sometimes both, and most of the time they don't even know it.

If he actually knew what he was doing when passing you he shouldn't have clipped any of the gear that your partner used. That is his tough luck if some pitons are taken, he should be that much more competent to find other gear or run it out if he is passing.

Lots of people who think they are faster and should pass often aren't. I wouldn't like you unclipping my rope either, but he shouldn't have put himself in that position by sharing placements.

WTF? Don't be dissing Hallett - you wouldn't know choss if it hit you on the head. Worth cutting your rope for that.

The rudeness and threats are completely uncalled for and indefensible ...even if you were sport climbers...however that was gonna be a crowded belay with all 4 of you there --assuming you were gonna let them pass after you joined up with your partner, or were you just going to keep simul-climbing until one team pulled ahead?

Either way, it seems like they were fast climbers but slow descenders? (since you got back to the packs first).

+1

The description I prefer instead of "broken piece of crap", is "Beautifully sculpted climbing holds."

It's not fractured, it's featured.

I concur, let's save the term "broken piece of crap" for those chunks of rock that are really deserving; namely, Eldo. Vaso agitado.

Is there a "stand your ground" law on Hallets?
