I've stood right in front of Sharma and looked him in the eye. I'm 5'10" 1/2" and he's definitely taller than me, probably at least an inch taller

everyone's met and compared their height to Sharma, getting jealous! It's really tough to tell someone else's height from your own point of view b/c our eyes are not at the top of our head, and we are always standing a bit aways. that is why i can see the top of the mountain from the ground even though it is taller than me. if i was up against i wouldn't be able to see the top. anyway sharma is taller than me, i wonder he would be bored enough one to to check out this thread and see tons of ppl debating how tall he is. probably misinformation he propogated on those sites to keep the debate up

Not sure how far back you are checking or relating to, but I think most ultra climbers today are pretty fit, thin, but nowhere anorexic. Old school guys were burly muscle guys (John Long, Joe Brown)but not sure what era you are looking back to for a reference. Gymnastically fit guys and girls are out there today, nobody seems that thin or under nourished in my opinion.

And here he looks a few inches shorter than Ondra, who calls himself 5'11".

I like the elastic Sharma theory.

J. Newton is the man. I love that the big guy's personal pic is him carrying a pack on a hike - a lot different than the kids I once heard at the New carrying a stick clip saying they couldn't do a certain approach because it would make their legs too big.

Even if you account for the stagger (not a big effect), and shave Ondra's head, I think he'd still be an inch or two taller than Sharma.

Screw it man, just climb and have fun. The weight will come off, or it won't. I'm short and skinny, nobody gives a fuck. Unless you are famous, apparently.

Check out photos of John Dunn, the Irish dude, not the guy from Rifle. He was sending mid .14 in the early to mid 90s, and was a nice pudgy 200+.

Calling an Englishman Irish could get you in trouble :). John Dunne was from Bradford in Yorkshire, north England and he was one of the first people to climb 5.14d sport and climbed mid 5.14 on gear. Though he is a very big boy he could also do a one armed pull-up from the first time he tried.

Could partly be related to the ever increasing size of the general American & changed attitudes regarding body size/appearance.

Women are now getting butt enhancements to make them look bigger, France has proposed laws outlawing "too skinny" fashion models, large size models and actresses are pretty mainstream, etc.

Skinny is no longer "in" in America (& possibly France?)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
