Climbing Potrero Chico

I'm planning to take a trip to Potrero Chico sometime this fall/winter as I'm not much of a cold weather person and I've always wanted to go to Mexico. I've searched around a bit for info and it seems that the best / most popular time is December - March, but I was thinking of going a bit earlier (say October or so). Will conditions be reasonable to climb then or will it still be too hot?

I was also wondering about the ease of finding partners down there. I'm trying to convince some of my US climbing buddies to come along but so far I haven't gotten anything better than a "maybe". Would it be relatively easy to find partners down there if I ended up going solo?

Any other EPC beta is also appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi, im going to potrero in october and its probably the best time a year because it does get really cold in the winter it does not snow but temperatures do drop and it usually rains in november and december ive been in both months and i gets chilly,

im going not sure exactly what dates imgoing but for sure in october, maybe we can meet over there i live in mazatlan its only an 8 hour drive, if not theres always people climbing there just stay at any of the camping ranches around there like rancho cerro gordo its my favorite one.

Cool man, thanks for the tip. Let me know when you have your dates ironed out for October and maybe we can plan something.

Hey man potrero is great here is some info. The best place to stay is la posada it will be the busiest and the best place to find partners. The local climber down there is magic ed, his website is magicedspotrerochico.com you can contact him through his website, he can give you the lowdown on how many people are in the area and if the season has been busy. Also if your flying down he can pick you up from the airport (much better than a cab).I've always gone down in march and it can get hot for sure but there are plenty of super classic routes to do chasing the shade. Not sure what the weather in october is like though, I would ask Ed. As long as there are people in the area finding a partner should be relatively easy. The scene is super friendly and finding partners is easy. Check out the coffeehouse el buho when your down there. Also if your psyched on hard single pitch you should try to get down to el salto, it's the best single pitch wall I've ever climbed on. Its also quite the adventure getting there and only 2 hours from monterrey. have a great trip hope this helps.

I made several trips down there over the years and never had problems finding partners. One time I even found a wife (became mine, not someone else's,lol), go figure.

So, have a great trip!

Every year is a bit different. Sometimes there's a good group of climbers here by September and others not until late November. In general, though, I would say your best bet for good weather and plenty of partners would be early November. Make sure your shoes have plenty of rubber on them and be prepared to climb thousands of glorious feet every day.

p.s. It's never too hot to climb in the Potrero--the way the walls are oriented there is always good shade available somewhere.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
