When a climber thinks climbing matters. Come on haters! And another one: when I think my response matters.

People that say "take slack" drive me nuts.

Just say "up rope".

Smoking, dogs, big groups, music, beta spray, talking loudly...all of those things can be fine in certain circumstances, but you need to be aware that sometimes you're affecting people around you and you need to make sure that you're not doing so in a negative way. I've been guilty of all of those things before, but I'll always try to adapt to the situation so to not bother anybody around me (or at least try to minimize the impact). A figure 8 with a long tail and a backup knot is your pet peeve? Strange...
The tail only needs to be about the length of your hand and a back up knot does nothing except keep an excessively long tail out of the way.

I know how a figure 8 needs to be tied, I just don't understand why seeing a long tail bothers you so much. It should have zero impact on your life.

What if the group is the result of some ingorant a-hole forgetting his rope in the car, and not realizing it until after the 2 hour approach to the crag? eh? :)

My pet peeve involves people who don't let others do their own thing.

We are all different and I want to spend the least amount of time around those complaining because someone else did something that has zero impact on me.

Common courtesy means respecting our differences and celebrating our similarities. That means NOT ragging on people for smoking or owning a dog or lowering off an anchor differently than you normally do. Common courtesy also means not ragging on people for bringing their friends climbing.

So what if a group has only one rope? More routes open for you, you ungracious ass. Climbers enjoy climbing and grow by sharing this passion with others; at one point in time we were all gumbys & probably first climbed on others' gear. Don't get your tinsel in a tangle just because a group of five 'climbers' are stoked to chill outside for a day to relax, picnic, and maybe even climb a bit. Now I hope you see why I'd rather climb with these people enjoying themselves than with some young wannabe bob scarpellis bitching about others "spending all day hanging out and only getting one climb in."

My pet peeve is this "typical american" entitlement-based attitude where favors once done for us are scorn when shared with others.

This. Without a doubt.

Not really a pet peeve since it's more hilarious and embarrassing than annoying, but my contribution would have to be climbers saying "watch me here!" or anything remotely similar when seconding a pitch or climbing on TR. What am I supposed to be watching for, exactly? You're about to fall? fantastic. have at it.

It is a pet peeve; they don't have to make sense.

Obviuosly you do not know what a pet peeve is. Do we need to explain it to you or should we trust you know how to use google and figure it out for yourself?

Heh, fair enough. Didn't mean to come off like a dick, sorry...it's been a long day.

On that note, I do remember seeing some kid a while back at the gym with a huge tail and the backup knot tied super high. He was trying to pull over some roof and when he fell the rope momentarily got caught on a hold and then when it came loose it snapped wicked hard and the backup knot pummeled him in the face, giving him a nice black eye.
