I am currently working in Eastern Europe and my wife wants to visit the Lake Lucerne (Switzerland) area in early October. I was hoping to do an easy 4th class/5.easy alpine adventure while there. (The wife isn't much of a climber, but she enjoys getting out.)
Any tips on what routes/areas? For those who have been, is this way too late in the year? I would greatly appreciate your help.
The hike up to and views from the Teirbergli Hutte are amazing. It's a steep hike and from what I remember and had some 3rd class scrambling in parts. The hut will probably be closed for the winter but the winter room will be open.
Gwachtenhorn is a great little adventure from the hut, but involves glacier travel so may be more than what you're looking for.
Google up Melchsee Frutt. Its a big sport crag that's good for family climbing in the alpine bog zone (tundra). Located south of Luzern, east of the highway/train to Interlaken and Meiringen, up a valley called the Melchtal. Also in the Melchtal are two big cliffs called Cheselenflue and Ofen (Oven). They're sunny for Fall, but not easy.
Of course, riding the Jungfrau Railroad to the top and climbing the Monch's SE Ridge is considered the easy way to bag a 4,000m peak. But, I'm not sure if the train runs that late in the year.
The Galtigentürme on Pilatus may be an option, not quite alpine, but a fun easy day on the rock with low commitment and good views of Lake Lucerne. Its a series of 4 towers/ridges and you can walk off after any of them. I climbed it in June, so I'm not sure what October would be like.
