We've got some real straight shooters on this, in-fact they've already arrested 35 suspects. Im sure Wankel from TexASS will appreciate my lingo here. You know everything's bigger in Texas (people, trucks etc) but unfortunately the Good Lord blessed Pakistan with the biggest mountains around. 168 out of the 200 peaks in the world over 7000 meters, and 6 of the world's 8000 meter peaks including K2 - which is not as fun to climb without ladders and fixed ropes as Everest is - but still a decent peak.
Not gonna lie - I think this guy gets it.

However, those forces are actually making a difference in stemming some of the violence. Embarrassing drone strikes wouldn't be such a problem if Pakistan would become willing partners in the fight. It is going to be very interesting to see what happens to this part of the world when ISAF pulls out in a year.
this guy...not so much.

Before we all get on board with the "Pakistan is all wonderful" party, its important to remember that there are elements of the Pakistani military and more specifically the ISI that are in fact supporting the Taliban, as well as Al Quaeda affiliates and other terrorist groups. There is a long list of evidence supporting this. However, this doesn't mean all (or even a majority of) Pakistanis harbor similar sentiments, you certainly can't tell how I feel about anything based on what the US gov does. The situation in Pakistan is very complicated, and its best not to simplify it with a bias toward either side.

I thought simplifying things until we could put people into nice little 'good' and 'bad' boxes was the American way.

Steve House, Conrad Anker, Kyle Dempster, Hayden Kennedy and Josh Wharton are alpinists I have a tremendous amount of respect for. I would highly encourage everyone who's contributed to this thread to take some time and listen to what these guys have to say, after having traveled to Pakistan multiple times:

True that.

And really, the Afghanis aren't all inherently evil, either.

Nah, you got it all wrong. It's called retribution. It's a might sad day when we have to resort to violence but sometimes it is warranted. In the instances where a little death is to be dealt I would rather we rolled up our sleeves and put in the work than rely on the notoriously corrupt and unreliable Pakistani military.

I wish all Countries would just respect each others right to whatever God they choose to believe in - and that no God wold want anyone to kill each other over land, money, power, control, etc.

I just wish everyone would have had enuff of all this bloodshed, death and dying for eons and just be content to live with the land they have and stop the killing...

Will it ever end? The Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

Lotta people still go to El Portrero Chico, I don't see much difference except for the ethnicity of the perpetrators.

"Men in leather with spears, preying on the weak with impunity, I hate them all Derfel". Is a line that I've always remembered from historical fiction author Bernard Cornwell's The Winter King. The same truth applies today as much as it did in pre-Saxon era Briton. Those with power can be corrupted all too daily. No military is exempt. There are corrupt Pakistani soldiers and there are honorable Pakistani soldiers who simply want to serve their country. Even our own military is no exemption. The sad truth is that for every hundred men and women who enlist to protect the innocent and fulfill their patriotic duty, there's going to be a couple who simply joined for a legal way to kill.

And perhaps the targets? I remember the recent incident, but have climbers been gunned down in EPC?

Climbers were gunned down en masse at El Potrero Chico?

I do not believe so.

A buddy of mine is returning from Pakistan right. Another friend of mine has cancelled his flight to Pakistan due to this event, as well. I can totally see how being afraid of gunmen at the base camp takes away any psyche for climbing.

They're targeting climbers there, too?

Pakistan may be a nice place with mostly peaceful people, BUT Islamic terrorists sure seem to enjoy attacking most anything Western or Progressive that they can't fit into their 7th century world view.

Did you hear about the actress in Pakistan who had acid thrown on her face while she was sleeping last week?
