Just ordered a used D40 DSLR with a standard lens, anyone have good ideas on a decent bag or camera bag to keep from beating it up in my crag bag? I saw someone with a t-shirt and a small dry bag that they would wrap the camera in, seemed dry if not the best protected. Thanks, Adam
One of my friends used to have a foam cage that he cut and glued to size around the front, lense and sides. He would just insert the camera into it. It was a pretty clever case.
I have a couple old 20D bodies that go climbing on a regular basis. What's really impressed me about these cameras is their durability. I used to carry a dedicated camera bag, but I've come to realize that transport isn't what beats the little guys up, it's actually having them out to take pictures. Even then, rock scratches, snow, ice, and water, just a seem to add character. After many years, my Canons are still going strong despite their lack of paint and even a few missing screws and cracks.
When I bring some camera kit on a trip, I just stuff it all into a convenient bag, like my 20L CiloGear. For longer approaches with a full pack, the camera gets layered between my jacket and helmet near the top of the pack. It's the best protection it ever gets.

P.S. All of this assumes that you have a similarly durable lens. I absolutely destroyed my crappy 50F1.8, and now I just use "L" lenses or inexpensive adapted lenses from the manual focus days when lenses were actually made of metal.
