Hi all. Has anyone taken on the summer heat for a cross country climbing road trip? Where did you go? I have about 3 weeks of time. My partner and I climb up to .10 and v3. We would like to start in New York (the Gunks) and end up in Seattle which is home.

For sport/bouldering in the northeast, I'd do Rumney rather than the Gunks. Yes, the Gunks has bouldering, but Rumney has amazing sport climbing and tends to be a BIT cooler in the summer.

On the western end of your trip, you could take a look at bouldering at a number of areas north of Bishop along the 395 as it steadily gains elevation heading to Mammoth Lakes and beyond. The Dreamers and the Catacombs areas on the Sherwin Plateau and Rock Creek are included in the Wolverine Bishop Bouldering guide. There is also bouldering in the Mammoth Lakes and June Lake area, with beta available here on MP. Toulumne Meadows is just a bit further north. I was there in August and you could manage the temperature quite well by choosing your elevation. You could get a couple hours in first thing in the morning at the Buttermilks, then head north and higher for reasonable bouldering temps while Bishop is seeing 95 degrees at noon. I camped in Mammoth Lakes and headed north or south as required.

Did a trip with a couple friends a few years back. We went from Rumney to San Diego and back in about a month early August to early September. I would recommend a stop in the Rushmore, needles, spearfish canyon area. If you want some trad devils tower is a must stop. The wasatch range in Utah has a lot of great climbing we climbed in big cottonwood, little cottonwood, and American fork canyons. Ask around local gear shops for good places to camp there are free places near these areas. Don't waste too much time in the middle of the country the best climbing is east and west. We took 33 hours to get from Rumney to Rushmore three guys taking four hour driving shifts, only stopping for gas and bathrooms.

If you go to Rumney, you might as well hit Smuggs in VT after that. The best summertime bouldering in NE because of elevation.

Just drove from ohio to Seattle. A broken ankle 6 months ago negated my climbing however I stopped and hiked to scope out many spots. Head to coopers rock for some bouldering when you leave the north east. Then the new river and red river gorges. Head toward South Dakota and hit the needles and Rushmore. After that plenty to climb around Bozeman, MT and many more through Washington.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
