Access Issue: Military Property: Former Live Artillery Range
Details
Between 1926 and 1966, the Department of the Army used Castner Range for the live firing of small arms, assault weapons, and air-defense artillery. Currently, in El Paso, Texas, there is a community effort to make Castner Range a National Monument. The Frontera Land Alliance, Franklin Mountains Wilderness Coalition and El Paso Community Foundation are leading this effort, but until this approval, Whispering Springs Canyon is considered inaccessible to the general public.
Description
Located within the Castner Range (refer to access issue) this wall was listed within the Franklin Mountain Range Climbers Guide as one of the most beautiful canyons in the Franklin Mountains and is often referred to by locals as the best sport climbing wall in the area. The Castner Range has exceptional scientific, cultural, ecological, geological, waterways and historical values. If you find yourself here, beware of unexploded ordnances, follow Leave No Trace Ethics, and check out the current proposal to make Castner Range a national monument.
