Re-slinging Camalots

I just recently bought a DMM 3CU which has the extendable sling already sewn on; I had the chance to use it over the weekend and really like that feature. My question is has anyone ever had luck re-slinging their Camalots with an extendable sling.

Pros, Cons, Price, Pictures???

Any input would be appreciated.

Caution. The thumb loop deforms under load and can cut the sling. That is why bd doubles up their issling and dmm ditched the thumb loop.

Depending on the material you use and how you do it, it may not be an issue. YMMV

Enough said...looks like I'll still be racking my alpine draws. I guess I just need to get some super lightweight ones.

If by camalots you mean c4s then no, but if you mean the older single stem camalots then you could do it safely.

In my case I do have some older single stem units that I'd like to re-sling. (I procrastinated on sending them to bd or wherever, now trip is a week away!) Tubular webbing is what's on there...just do that again with a water knot and good tail? I find that Gemini cord or whatever it's called kind of stiff and annoying, but I guess I could do that if there's a good reason to do so.

I just wanted to say that I ended up using Runout Customs in Moab. Luke did great work with extremely responsive customer service, and he turned the cams around very quickly. I'd use him again in a heartbeat, and in fact I did drop 2 more cams off with him at Gearheads on my way to the Moab airport!

If you Google his site it's fairly detailed as to what he can do, and he's really good with email replies if the site doesn't cover it.

I have always been curious why BD has this issue but no one else does. I mean, the thumb loops on other cams are basically identical to those on the BD. I even think Metolius' smaller cams might use a thinner diameter steel cable. Yet, being quite similar, numerous other manufacturers use Dyneema slings on their thumb loops without issue (Totem, Metolius, Fixe and others). Also, the X4s have a Dyneema sling and from what I can tell the thumb loop construction is basically the same as the C4—steel cable wrapped in plastic, nothing special.
