I went out to check out the bouldering in this area today for the first time, and though I knew of the homeless man that used to live there, I wasn't quite ready for what I came across. That castle needs to go. The "castle" itself looks like it might be hiding some interesting roof problems (I didn't get to close to inspect the rock; too many heebie jeebies), but even more than that, there's so much debris and trash that it's unreal - both creepy and disgusting. I ran into a woman who lives in the area, and she said that she hadn't seen the "occupant" (the bald, very tan man who used to walk around town rocking Hefty bags as a muumuu) in at least a year and I haven't either. While it would take quite the volunteer effort (dealing with the sheer amount of debris, possible and even probable human excrement, and possibly some used drug paraphernalia), I think that it would be worth while to clean the area up; I assume we all care about the area that we recreate in. I contacted the WCCC via their facebook page as well, but thought I'd post something here too.
So, any takers on getting really dirty, but making the place more appealing and possibly discovering some sweet cave routes?
The WCCC is currently working with the city to legally remove the homeless camps up in this area. We are hoping to be able to get approval for this summer. There is a lot of legal reasons we can't just go up and remove it but there is a legal way to do it. Last summer the WCCC came to an agreement with the City of Grand Junction in regards to cleaning up this area, graffiti and trash removal as well as the removal of the homeless camps has been our priority. The city supplied us with paint and we painted over the graffiti on the explosive bunkers and we removed a truck load of trash during a cleanup day last summer. With time our hope is to get this area cleaned up and respectable. Thank you for your interest and offer to help, as soon as we can get a cleanup day arranged we'll let you know.
