Told you can't climb because of a photo shoot? How do you respond?

Eric G asked: Did you pay for all that land with love and experience?

Inheritance. I don't make nor keep enough money to purchase land.

I assume you are trying to make a point. Please share as your point isn't seen by me.

I hadn't heard that term in years. Great use of it!

Ah, I guess I was just being a dick. My bad, you don't deserve it.

You know how the things that annoy you the most are things you recognize in yourself? Well, your naive manifesto there reminds me of myself when I was 20. Back when I lived in a house with no electricity for a period because we were so broke so that we could "live the dream."

Or beat the soloist to the top and drizzel some spooge or oil on the last pitch. .

Ah the essence of free soloing.. Radio chicks, production crews, and helicopters.

Should have negotiated a day of climbing with Alex.

Also interested in the answer to this, if anyone knows.

I would have started free soloing the route and explained to them they could get some footage of me for free, or I like the taking of a bribe idea & then climbing Coyote Calling.

I agree it sucks being told you can't climb but I'd think of it like this. If you were the one shooting a video would u want others to get in the way? If they block off every route that's lame but if its only the route they are on I don't think it's unreasonable. We all like climbing videos right?!?

We all like climbing videos right?!?

But I'm sure we all prefer actually climbing to watching climbing videos.

Your audience here is probably like rabid dogs for stolen "time out climbing." After all round the clock climbers are probably not sitting in front of the computer debating the ethics of this. Climbing is the only time I don't check my phone/forums constantly, and most of the time it's in places with bad service.

So, you might have to ask a different crowd.

Or beat the soloist to the top and drizzel some spooge or oil on the last pitch.

You can't beat a soloist, that's why they do it. They are lighter and don't have to mess w/ anything. Switching belays, dealing w/ the rope, plugging or even clipping gear is what takes up all the time.

Sure you can... solo an easier route and just do it faster.

Or start a soloist brawl half way up the tower on the same route like those Sherpas kicking some western ass on Everest.

If commercial video and photography permits are anything like commercial guiding permits then generally no. If you get on a route before someone like a guide it's not like they can order you to get off and vice versa. I imagine it's the same first come, first served mentality.

The next level: soloist brawling! I love it! 2000ft up battle royale! Only one survives...possibly because they'd still have to finish the climb. Offwidth battles sound super fun.

Fundamentally, I was pretty okay with things. My partner was a bit more annoyed the day of, but I didn't get too riled up until I though the whole situation through in hindsight. We're it a different industry, say Hollywood, and Michael Bay was taking a shit on film at the Empire State Building, it would more or less be expected that a regular tourist isn't going to get free reign of a tour.

I didn't realize there was a forum post warning about the shoot, that makes things much better honestly. I'm stoked that someone is getting recognition for their skills and making money doing what they love. And in Honnold's defense, this publicity follows him, I have no doubt in my mind that he did't want to mess up a weekend warrior's adventure, and it was kinda cool (if a bit loud) to see the helicopter buzzing around the towers.

It ended up making for a good story, and despite the annoyance of the fixed rope, we had a great time running up the North Chimney instead of Fine Jade anyway. Like Locker said, there is a lot of good rock up there, and it's hard to rationalize complaining about "only" getting to summit Castleton.

But to say that my original post was "whining" is just immature. I simply wanted to hear everyone's thoughts so I could broaden my thinking on the whole shenanigan. Thanks a lot for all the thoughtful posts guys, in hindsight, I should have definitely tried to get some money!!! Haha

But I think that as climbing becomes more of a mainstream covered sport, these issues are going to pop up more and more. And it's really only a matter of time before something like this happens to all of you here.

If you are that determined for that specific route; ask to see the permit. When they can't produce said permit (although all that activity, if no permit was given, I would imagine the local police would LOVE to talk to them), you walk right on past and start climbing. As if no climbing videos ever had someone else appear in them? You could always use the joke that if said climber really is free soloing, they must need a rope to get down and that you will happily take it up to them.

This stuff goes on at Stoney Point all the time. Chatsworth is the center of the porn industry.

Be nice to the crew and the "actors" ... one time they let me act!!!

"Big Horse" needed a stand in, the producer took one look and I was in.

I think the film is named "Jessica goes climbing - outside" ....

made $1,000 and got 6 hours on my SAG card.

Not necessarily. Most people check threads, conditions, etc. before heading off to a super popular trade route area.

And you were whinning... Don't deny it.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
