Does anyone know about any free camping along lake superior? Near Palisade climbing area. one that you wouldn't get a ticketed for camping on?

Not sure about the ticket....But I have stayed over night (weekend nights) in the back of the gravel pit that is one of the parking areas for the superior hiking trail. The gravel pit is located on Little Marais road a few miles up hill from the intersection of 61 on the right side. Drive past Palisade head a few miles north, and past Hwy 1 till the "town" of Little Marais.

Pretty much any of the trailheads for the Superior Hiking trail will work. About a dozen miles south of Palisade is Beaver Bay...you can go west out of town to the trailhead, cross the road and go down the snowmobile trail till you can't see the road and pitch your tent there. Not very scenic, but it works.

After they closed Crystal Beach, we always camped in the parking pit for the crag Section 13. It may still be the closest spot to Palisade Head.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
