Anyone know whether Road 289, the dirt road up to Cochiti Mesa, is open and passable? Any word on camping near Cochiti Mesa? Thanks!

I don't know if it's open from the "bottom" but from the top, as of two weeks ago, there was a orange/white barricade with no signs on it in the middle of the road. It appears vehicles had driven around it (staying on the road, though, because the barricade is not that wide). Note that I'm not advocating driving around the barrier, just stating an observation.

I believe the road is typically opened between April 15 and May 15 depending on snow. Given we had a terrible winter here and there is no snow remaining now, the road could be open officially by now.

That said, the climbing at Cochiti Mesa is, for all intents and purposes, gone and/or way sketchy. See the comments at the Cochiti Mesa page.

Jason, any thoughts on a good sport crag in Northern NM to visit this weekend?

I live up here in the Jemez and drive SR4 almost everyday. FR289 is open from the top. But do not know if it is open from the bottom. Also I drove passed graduation flats but didnt go all the way to the crags at Cochiti. It is very burt back there and do not know if they are allowing camping at the moment.

Conditions at cochiti as reported by a friend have walls that were exposed to the fire very brittle, with holds literally crumbling in their hands. They did not try the north faces, perhaps they are better

thanks all, I think we'll try El Rito instead.
