You must BE living in Never, Never Land bro if you think the world today is a very safe place! LOL. You're dead wrong dude! Look at frikken Jodi Arias! I'd be willing to bet that you even voted for Obama as well is my guess!

I agree with the dog comment if you are that worried. Not really as you will have a whole nother set of problems. On other hand these two have a uncanny way of knowing when something is not right or does not belong, and when it is not i promise they are not so cute anymore. Darn right scary tbh!

I have done a couple of road trips solo and I am female. I went to the red and within 2 days met a group of 3 and climbed with them including trips to other areas. So I was really only solo for a short time. Others have commented on areas that are good choices. If you have the time and money , do it.
Feel free to pm me for advice on road tripping or climbing in Utah.

Fall Guy is damn right - I am saddened to day. Most people our there are decent people - but it only takes 1 asshole to get ya killed. I worked as a RN in a correctional facility - and I can attest - it's no picnic. These SOB's will kill you 'just because' - they have nothing left to lose - they're doing life - so what do they care is you become another statistic?

You need to be smart today and protect yourself - be it a great dog, pepper spray, firearm, etc. It's like a life insurance policy - so-to-speak - one of those kinda things where 'You hope you never need to use it - but should you need to - it's THERE.'
Period.

Don't get a dog. Don't let NYClimber scare you. Don't watch the fucking "news". Don't be afraid of climbers.

Put yourself out there, enjoy your life, and you're garanteed to meet some amazing people. Keep your head on straight and avoid sketchy situations and you'll most likely be just fine.

As someone else said, solo trips don't tend to stay solo for long if you're a pleasant person.

It seems like every time a female friend gets stoked for a solo adventure there are fifty people telling her she's gonna get raped and kidnapped and killed. I know a lot of women that went for it anyway and had a blast, and also a lot of women that got scared off and never tasted true freedom.

Please don't let these assholes scare you out of it. Contact me if you want to hear some stories that will make you stoked.

And NYClimber... How many women in your life; be it family or close friend, have ever been raped or killed because they were out of the house alone? How many times have you used your gun for self protection? Are you sure that your fears are rational?

What a bunch of drivel. Guns, worries about cooking when it's raining, dogs, how will I access my bank account.
I have lived in Utah for 15 years, owned a guide service in Moab for 11. The parade of solo, 20 something women driving into town in their trucks and cars has been steady and wonderful. In that time I have witnessed nothing but goodness. Some stay for a bit, some for years. Some go home, some have gone on to become pro athletes, run guide services, back to school, some have even reproduced giving us the next generation of dirt bags.
Leave your home town, go somewhere you think you'd like to climb, meet people, get a job or don't, live in the dirt, shower when u can, eat when you can, climb all you can

It's like leading a hard pitch thinking about it isn't going to get it done.

I know someone personally that was raped - yes. And I know the daughter of a barber here in upstate NY (I don't like in NY City bro) - I like 2 hrs south of the Dacks. His daughter and 2 of her friends where tied to tress in the 'Dacks years ago when camping and all 3 stabbed to death. I'm not paranoid. And my sister and her husband had a damn close encounter themselves when hiking in the Dacks as well by two local rednecks. had my brother-in-law not made his Glock be seen on his holster - that encounter might have gone bad. I'm not paranoid at all bro - but I have been a EMT and a ER Trauma/Psych RN long enuff to know there IS some bad shit going on out there. I'm not paranoid nor am I saying that it to discourage anyone! She should go do it and have fun and enjoy the experience - but just be smart about it and careful is all I am saying!
Look what just happened in CT and CO! That sure wasn't NY dudes and CT is a very upscale, expensive place to live as well!

Quick everyone get a gun that will fix it lol, please! Arm all the teachers, guns in schools, that's the answer why did we not think of that before all these mass shootings ;) Riiiiight ok next, can we all come back down to earth now pleeeease. The level intellectual intelligence regarding humanity is clearly at a all time high lol...

I thank ebry dam teacher in this good old United States ob Omerica should be carryin at least five guns at all times. Dobn't you thank Chester, Yes i thanks so Bobby Joe. I wouldnt want to drop or misplace my pistol and find myself in a baaahd satuation. Shit Booby Joe now that i thank bout it maybe you shud git urself a few Ied's in fow tha bottom drawer of ur desk.

Yeah that is exactly what all those parents that lost their children in Newtown CT are in Washington fighting for. Please!!!!

Anyway i have spent plenty of time in the southwest, much of it in Tucson, Mexico, New Mexico, Texas Southern California and most of this time within earshot of the Mexican border. Much of that time was spent 50-60-100 miles into the desert on a bicycle all by myself. Yes people in those areas tend to be absolutely batshitcrazy compared to the northeast. And yes shit gets really real, really really quick when you are alone 100 miles into the desert and something goes wrong. However imop part of what makes this so real is that everyone carries a dam gun and all they have to do is lean out the window of there car and shoot you dead!

The best thing one can do anywhere anytime is be aware. If it feels wrong it probably is, if it feels right you are probably ok. You might end up wrong one of these days but that goes without saying. If you live your life in fear of these situations you will never leave the dam house and cahnces are you will grow to hate life. You just have to have a good head on your shoulders. Only you know if you have this capacity. If you don't then yes maybe traveling is not for you. If you are scared of these things/situations than traveling is not for you imop!! You have to be capable of reading your surroundings at all times and knowing how to react to them. If you are already scared you are fucked! Just like a dog people sense fear and insecurity. Yes a nutbag can strike at anytime, clearly we have seen that is the case as of late. If nothing else we all have learnt as of late is it not hat shit now happens anywhere anytime?

When all goes wrong a gun is not a guarantee to fix the problem. Might it help sure? Chances are though imop unless you are quite the savy creature and gun owner specifically handler a true predator will use you own dam gun against you or at least take it out of the equation so you dont use it on him. Kinda like shooting or poisoning the dog before break into the house ;)

I am also a young woman and have roadtripped around the country a fair amount by myself and to a number of climbing areas for extended amounts of time. For the most part, I have had really great experiences and think that you should go for it. Please feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

A couple of tips:
I was travelling before I knew of this site and others like it--use this as a resource to have a local person's phone number for wherever you end up going so that you can have someone to call if you need a break from camping. Hopefully people will offer to help you.

I always felt safer when I camped near other people and it is cheaper to share sites when you have to pay. When you get to a campground, drive around the campground loop and look for climbers and ask if you can split the site with them. It is very common to do this in popular climbing areas...cheaper camping, people to hang out with at camp, and climbing partners galore.

If you feel unsafe, don't ignore it. I slept in a tent for the most part, but I would move to my car and sleep uncomfortably to have the benefit of locked doors for a night and a faster escape if something in the situation got weird.

Also, I have no idea what your climbing level is (and I'm sure that this is obvious), but I had the most fun at places where I could successfully climb a large number of the routes for many reasons, but mostly because it meant that I could always find a partner. On that note, think about going to places with good bouldering in the vicinity as well.

Good luck!

No you dong! The women I watched go through this process and have come to know and love are all safe and happy.

And though I am not a women I did, in 1997, quit my job, pack up my things from my shitty little box on 78th and Columbus and leave the Big Dirty, I mean Apple. I have a bit of experience with tossing around a move like this. Oh and I haven't actually had to use a gun or dog either.

Perfect the Tri-state area is a warzone, thanks for the update. Perhaps you should cite some instances where young women who were at popular climbing venues had problems.

It's gotten like that in many places today sadly.

Let's see - Arias kills her BF brutally in AZ. The Joker kills a shitload of people minding their own business in a movie theater in CO. Lanza kills a bunch of kids in a school in CT.

It's just just in NY folks...it's all over the USA today.

My point was just - be careful. If not - hey - go for it then! It's your life. Take the plunge!
