1) I called the park service office at the south rim visitor center today
2) They told me law enforcement rangers were heading to the north rim to inspect the road and -potentially- open the gate tomorrow (Friday)
3) A ranger at the south rim told me the SOB Gully will still have ice in it
Q's: - Routes are dry (per park ranger). Will it be miserable down in there? Too cold? - First climbers of the season dealing with TONS of freeze-thaw impacted rock? - Ice in SOB Gully: travel considerations? Crampons/ tool?
Thanks for beta and for not telling me to just go figure it out!!!

firstly a big LOL at "BCOG" acronym, never seen that one before.
temps should be pretty perfect, maybe softshell climbing but the weather has been great up here and will be through the weekend.
That will all change Monday night/Tuesday with a big upslope storm system heading CO way... BCOG won't be affected most, but I'm sure it will snow a bit.
Spring is prime time for loose rock.
Crampons/axes in the SOB draw... if you must... personally I would just wait... or climb from the Cruise Gulley
Just go figure it out. You don't climb in the black for perfect lines and clean rock you climb there for adventure so why should acess be any different. If your worried about being cold stay home with your electronics and gizmos. Jeesh!

To question your reading comprehension... From original post: "Thanks for beta and for not telling me to just go figure it out!!!"
Also: -you spelled "access" incorrectly -you used the incorrect "your" in your third sentence.
Have a wonderful week, -Dylan Weldin
UPDATE: Park service officials at the North Rim gave me a call mid day last Friday and said the gate was opened at around 11am and will stay open for the season. The road is clear all the way to the campground with a few snowy patches in and around the campground.
My partner and I decided to bail after seeing a 40% chance of rain over the weekend. I would be happy if Kevinmurray bailed on his entire rack after getting caught in a storm because he didn't check the forecast. I went to El Rito to clip bolts and he skied the south face of Engineer if anyone cares.

I have an Alaskan friend who is stoked on the Black... he calls it the BCOG (pronounced "Buhhh Caaahhhhhhgggg") and it has spread among friends enough that it's stuck. Sorrryyyy :)
