I'm a fly-fishing guide out of Eureka, CA. Here's my question: I'm looking for some rivers in the western US that I can float down and fish that also has good climbs right next to it. I'd prefer it to be a multiple day float. All the rocks around my rivers are chossy, or are just small boulders.
This is my idea of a good time! Who knows what I'm talkin' about?

The Colorado River through Glen Canyon in AZ. The 15 mile stretch from Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry is world class trout fishing along a 500-700ft sandstone canyon. The rock is Navajo Sandstone, not quite as solid as the Wingate, nor does it have many base-to-rim splitters but lots of single pitch cracks that could be linked with face climbing if you desired. There are some existing routes but its mostly a free-for-all with LOTS of new route potential. Many campsites along the river and some big, technical side-canyons. You won't be disappointed.
the north platte (alcova wy) has been on fire! we've been running trips on the mile and grey reef and in fremont. don't think you could float fremont but makes for an amazing non fishing day! another non float would be the frying pan...good climbing, amazing fishing... the colorado through glenwood canyon! crazy choss but some decent lines and great fishing! i think theres potential for climbing above there as well... from pump house to state bridge (my memory sucks but...) and again, the fishing is outrageous! the arkansas above penrose looks pretty amazing...(better raft than drift boat). theres some climbing in buena vista... i think these would get you close to your objective but maybe not exactly what you are looking for.
