East Coast Climber Moving to Sacramento

I will be moving from New York to Sacramento (probably North Highlands) in the beginning of June. I spend most of my time climbing in the Adirondacks, so I am hoping there will be some sort of "adventure climbing" out there. Any beta on the climbing scene around the Sacramento area? It looks like the Sierra Foothills North is the closest area on MP.

Refer to these. That should get you started.

Much thanks. Lots of good info there.

You'll miss the Dacks some, but will probably love it here.

In North Highlands, you'll want to decide if you're better off with a revolver or a semi-auto. And don't declare it at the border.

I think that my best bet will be to live in Sacramento and bike to work in NH. It'll be a better place to live coming right out of college.

How does Pipeworks compare to Granite Arch? The prices at GA for a year membership are way more reasonable.

M.Morley wrote:Hey Bill- Sacramento has a great climbing community. I agree with caughtinside that living in (or near) Midtown is the way to go for a guy your age. Pipeworks is a very nice gym and the people are cool. Easy day trips (<1.5 hrs) to Sugarloaf, Phantom Spires, Lover's Leap, Donner, Auburn, and Consumnes. We'll have regular weekend trips planned throughout the spring and summer, so feel free to give a call if you want to tag along. Mike
Awesome. Thanks for the info, Mike. I'll probably fly to Sacramento before I move for good in June to check out the Midtown area and try to secure an apartment. All of the rock in the Tahoe area looks so clean, much different than the lichen and moss covered faces in the Adirondacks. I'll drop you a message when I finally get settled in and we can meet up at Pipeworks sometime.

Hey Bill,

I'm a northeast transplant to Sactown as well & dig it. Not exactly right on the rocks, but there is a lot of climbing within 2 hrs., and some little crags only 30-45 minutes away (though they'll be pretty hot by the time you get out here). A bit further out, the opportunities for alpine rock adventure in the Sierra are staggering!

Pipeworks is pricey, but also includes pretty much all of their fitness classes, so if you are into yoga, crossfit, etc. it would be a good deal. Even still, the location clinches it, as less driving = more time to train (or drink beer). That said, I bailed for the dry season as I have a backyard training rig & am a cheap bastard.

Highly recommend the bike to work thing - I live in Sac. & roll to work regularly. Good workout, good times!

Welcome to Cali man!

Andy

Good stuff, Andy. I'll be heading out to Sac this Friday until Monday to find an apartment, buy furniture, buy a car, set up bank accounts, etc. and am really looking forward to the one-way flight on June 1st. I might hold off on the Pipeworks membership until I really get settled in and buy all of the other stuff I'll need (like a bike).

The nice weather all year long will definitely be a nice change after living in Upstate NY for the past 4 years and RI for the rest of my life. Looks like I can leave my ice scraper at home.

I'll post back up when I am actually in town for good and maybe I can check out that backyard rig of yours. I have a setup in my basement at school that I train on instead of spending the $$ for a gym membership.

Pack it anyway. You'll be 90 minutes from the Sierra, where you'll need it in winter (if you ski or ice climb)!

Good point. I plan on packing my skis and skins because Southwest lets you count skis as luggage for no extra fee. I'm assuming there is plenty of ski touring around there.

Right on Bill - cool training set up. Drop me line when you get settled and we'll introduce you to my crack machine.

Depends on the year. Increasingly hard to coordinate time off work with snowfall. Climate change deniers should be forced on a Sierra Crest Death March to witness desertification first hand. But we always hope for snow, and sometimes it's delivered.
