Harnesses and testicle pain study?

I have no idea why we started discussing this but, anyone ever hear of testicle damage from harnesses over time? Bicycle seats have been culprits for issues down below and was wondering if any studies (scientific or not) had been commissioned on the long term effects of being in a harness. Sorry for the weird topic, just couldn't find any info on it.

One informal study covering the short term effects of harness v. sack was conducted by yours truly whilst clipping bolts at Shelf Road two years ago and had very conclusive results. Although the sample size (N=1, or 2 depending on how you want to interpret it) and trials (also 1) were small enough to make the study irrelevant in the minds of many, the correlation between not tightening your harness sufficiently/taking a 15 foot lobber and sharp and intense scrotum pain was proven conclusively in mine.

haha, Thanks VU! But I was thinking in terms of chronic usage over time as opposed to an acute injury. We were discussing if 30 years from now any damage would be had from sitting in hanging belays and getting sacked repeatedly when catching your heavier partner as he whips off his/her project time after time. . .

Whoa Nelly!
You guys must be single, right? Testicular castration among married men usually occurs during the first 4 to 6 weeks of marital bliss.
Often times without said male ever knowing this heinous
action has even occurred!

The rare opportunities I DO get to borrow said cajones, she makes me carry them in a protective sack that I carry in one of those deep pockets ln my cargo shorts. This keeps them well away from any harness infraction.

If your nuts are consistently getting sqished then you need a new harness &/or a tighter scrotum sack.

Wasn't there a post last year showing the picture of the guy's testicles squeezed out of the sack due to a loose harness?

Boy this thread is really going downhill fast.

Micah, is that a roll of quarters in your harness? Or are you just happy to be climbing?

Looks similar to a text message the former congressman Anthony Wiener used to impress a lady and we all know how that worked. ...

As you were

Go back a few decades to the time when the Whilans sit harness was the best harness out there and its no wonder climbers never worked a route. For the youngsters in the crowd this harness had a center crotch strap with a carabiner loop. The tie in point was on the waist belt then you clipped the rope thru the locking biner on said crotch strap. When you fell your nut sacked got whacked, hence the saying - The leader must never fall. Yeah we might have claimed it was to climb in better "style" not to hang or fall, that was utter bullshit it was self preservation and necessary if you ever wanted to have kids. Falling in that harness was like playing hacky sack with your nutsack. Think training your dog with a shock collar, all it took was 1 to 2 falls in a Whilans sit harness and you got the message. So then many climbers switched to a swami belt made from wrapping 10 to 12 ft of 2 inch tubular webbing around your waist tied off with a water knot. So rather then getting your nuts crushed you simply got your rib cage crushed along with your kidneys. So occaisionally after a big fall you might just piss a little blood. And again you can't project a route on a swami, hence if you fell you lowered back to the ground and rather quickly to avoid asphyixation (sp?). Hanging belays were simplified with a belay seat, single point nylon seat to clip to your belay anchor. Then Bill Forrest came out with one of the first harnesses (at least in the U.S.) that paired leg loops with a sewn swami belt. Not sure what year that was, late '70's maybe. So a study back then might have been of use, a well fit harness should not cause any problems from hanging at belays or falling.

I'm surprised Eric "I'm a Moran" Schmidt hasn't chimed in on this thread since he likes riding everyone's nuts! This is a perfect forum for him. I guess you have to have a pair to comment on this thread...or his pair hasn't dropped yet?

Just hopping in to say that I am glad to see that Eric Schmidt has a reputation around here. One that is not incorrect

I thought this thread was a joke and then it happened...

Last night I slipped off a hold at the gym and WAILED my sac.

My right bag got caught under/between the leg loop and it frikkin' KILLED.

It hurt insanely bad- not like the ordinary, "oh I banged my nuts and it's going to hurt in 3 seconds" type of pain, but an immediate, sharp, focused, "oh shit I just totalled my junk!!!" type of pain.

I literally went straight to the bathroom to check the boys, expecting to see a complete disaster in my pants.

Luckily they looked fine. Sore the rest of the night with the harness on, so I bouldered for another couple hours before going home. By the time I left everyone felt totally normal.

But fuck me runnin' I was scared there for a minute. Don't want to do that ever, EVER again.

Lesson learned- I now have "climbing underwear" on one side of my drawer.

These aren't the comfy ones I buy, these are the ones my wife gets me that I never wear because they're ludicrously tight. Keeps your whole package packed away compact-like, away from danger. They're like a stuff sack for your garbage.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
