Going to head out there this summer (late july). Looking for beta on camping/bivy sites, H2O sources, approach, route finding/rack, permitting, bear containers etc...

70m single rope sufficient or doubles needed?

Cheapest place to fly into?

Any beta you have would be appreciated.

Cheers

rangers will tell you to get a canister when you get your permit. you can rent them in town. there are a couple bivy caves, one is quite nice. there is also plenty of large flat meadow to put a tent/bivy. (might be snowy early season) water runs through this meadow, walk upstream to avoid contamination (human). there is always some snow, so feel free to bring cooler-food

the approach is really not that hard to follow, so long as you don't miss the turn off the main trail at the big rock/tree. people make it out to be some sort of labyrinth

route finding is easy once you're up there. though the line looks improbable from the ground. it's quite stunning.

you need an 80m to rap Venturi or you can walk off

You can actually rap off Venturi with a 70 but the third rap will be super tight, you are using rope stretch to get to the next set of anchors.
This (and Sunspot) are one of the best climbs I have ever done. Please leave no trace, the area has certainly suffered from increased visitation in the last couple of years.

Depending on the year, you'll find plenty of snow in July. I was there in August and we had to cross a few big patches of snow. Plenty of water, like S Denny said, walk up hill and filter it. There are all kinds of bivy spots up there. Just make sure not to fuck the place up.

Approach is easy to follow and won't take more than 3 hrs.

When I'm climbing on a wall that big, summitting seems to be the logical decision. But it takes a few more pitches of crap climbing to get to the top, just so you can do a horrible walk down a scree/boulder field for an hour or so. It's not a fun walk off at all. Might make sense to rap.

I will go back to that place as many times as I can. The Hulk is stunning.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
