Moab Canyon Advice

My Family will be on spring break in Moab in mid April we will be biking and climbing, but would like to go down a canyon. My wife and 11 yr. old can both climb in the 6-8 range. Both can rappel/lower preferably not 200 feet free. We don't have wetsuits, so not to wet. We don't mind a whole day out, decently fit.Any help would be appreciated. |

Midevil chamber off the slickrock trail is a super short slot with 2 80-100' raps, one of which is next to morning glory arch (or off it if you want to simul rap). You then hike a few miles out the bottom of negro bill canyon to the river road, you'll need to do a car shuttle or arrange a ride at the bottom. Not a whole lot of options for good slot canyons around moab, this is the only one I have done but I have heard of a few more (mainly on climbutah) Maybe check out the canyon collective. |

You should check out Elephant Butte in Arches NP. Not so much of a slot canyon, but has some canyoneering aspects. Summits the highest point in Arches NP. Tons of route beta online. Check out the website climb-utah.com for tons of great canyoneering beta in and around Moab with topos and GPS. You have to pay to view some of the routes, but a lot of the popular ones are free. |

I have beta on canyons, petroglyphs and other oddities that are good for families or more. You can email me if you want more details. Some are all day, some are a few hours, some require shuttle or 4wd, others do not. |

Rock of Ages (AKA Pool Arch Canyon) across the river from Wall Street would be a great option! This is a dry canyon with 3 rappels, the largest being ~160' and all of them very straightforward both in rigging and rappelling. (First rappel is off of a large tree at the lip, the next two off of double bolt anchors.) The approach is a beautiful scramble up to the top of the canyon and offers some amazing views. This would most likely take up a good portion of the day. Perhaps the best part is the lack of crowds such as those that you may run into closer to town. No waiting in line here! |

Well you have some of that right. Pool arch or teardrop arch has two swims neither one is very long so if it is warm don't worry about a wetsuit. They are commercially guided quite often also. So I'm not sure you won't run into anyone. That all being said great choice. Mid evil chamber is cool also but you will need a car shuttle, and if you have hiked negro bill canyon before it just adds a couple rappels . If you haven't ever done negro bill then it is a great hike. |

If you sling a tree and you don't have to extend the webbing a long distance the safest way to do it is to wrap the tree twice, tie the webbing ends using a water knot then tie an overhand on a bight creating a small loop for your rap ring/quick link. This way if the knot comes undone the anchor will still hold. |

We went to do this one spring and found a chest deep wade/swim, which the kids totally balked at. It was cold, snow in the shadows, so I couldn't really blame them. Hiked back out. Granary is a nice canyon, you can get the beta at ajroadtrips for just a couple of dollars. Robbers Roost has better canyons, IMO, but they are more remote. |

We decided on Rock of Ages and Big Horn. We will also do the climb/scramble on Elephant Butte. Thanks for all the great advice, we'll be careful. Hope the weather is nice, just keeps snowing here. |

Moab isn't that far from the swell or goblin valley. Do little horse thief and bell or ding and dang or chute and crack. These will give you a fun canyon experience with out raps or water all are super fun and take about half a day. Whatever you decide on be safe. |

Another climbing area good for beginners is a place called the ice cream parlor. It is listed under Kane Springs and is across the river from Wall Street. Very nice area, secluded and opposite of the Wall Street, get run over by a car feel. Easy slab climbs and a few trad climbs. Good hiking nearby as well. |

Also if you like easy climbing and rapeling then Looking Glass Rock is a must do.Reading comprehension? |
