Hi, we're looking to stay at a cheap dive hotel close to red rock in the beginning of april. Any suggestions? It would be great to have a place with a little kitchenette to prepare simple meals. Thanks!

That may assist you in your quest. Most of the areas nearest the scenic loop are newer suburbs so doubtful for the 'dive' motel if you mean that in the typical sense. Hell, even staying in Kandahar (an affectionate name for the campground) and cookin' it up at the campground wouldn't be a bad idea should your quest for a 'dive' hotel fail.

Check out the Bonnie Springs motel. $85/night during the week, $100 on weekends (pack a few people in and it's not bad), and you are closer to the climbs than if you stay at the campground. Heck, you can even walk to Black Velvet canyon (not short, but neither is the drive) from the motel!

Agree Bonnie Springs is a nice spot..otherwise there are cheaper off the strip motels across town, some near Henderson and such to the east, but increases your drive each day for sure.

We stayed at Hooter's Hotel and Casino for $20 or $30 a night during the week (Monday to Thursday). Totally worth it, although Hooter's isn't exactly bringing its A-game those days...

Since when is $85-100 dollars a night cheap? I know its close to the climbing and all but you can stay on the strip for $30-40 a night... There has to be cheaper options than that closer to the climbing as well.

I'm staying at a resort hotel in Vegas for free next week, so suckuh my juevos cabron!

I don't think this helped, well, anybody really, but it sure feels nice to brag sometimes. Have fun camping and slumming putas.

Not sure there is. I've stayed at the La Quinta on Sahara and its great if you can find a discount. 'Bout the best I've done.

Otherwise, I'm drivin' from the Palace Station. And, if your stay over a Friday/Saturday night, expect a huge price jump. And, don't forget to figure in those resort fees.

85 to 100 is cheap compared to the Red Rock Casino on a weekend...in April... Price that baby out. Ouch!

Oh im sure it is but we were able to find tons of hotels for about $40 a night on the stip... Sure its an extra twenty minutes in the car but its over half the price of bonnie springs. And they were asking for cheap hotels so just throwing it out there...

Thanks everyone. I've stayed at Bonnie Springs before, and rented houses for groups. But this time I'm just going with another girl friend so we thought we were looking for a cheap dive somewhere near RedRocks. I guess you're all right, it is the expensive part of town and everything is more than the strip itself.. for the most part. 60-80 is acceptable. And I suppose camping is an option. But I don't exactly own the type of camping equipment made for plane travel... I'll keep looking and repost.

We stayed at the Suncoast a couple of months ago at $35/night. Very close to the climbing and it was quite nice. I don't think that's their regular rate, but certainly worth looking into.

Capt Kirk can hook you up if you bid on a room for sure, priceline will hook you up. besides you already have to drive the loop, miles dont really matter much

I recently (February) got a room at the Palace Station for $26 / night. That was with taxes, service fees and everything else. It is not exactly close to RR, but only about a :20 min drive. (a local can correct me if my drive time est is off. i really did not pay attention when I was driving.)

Be aware, some of the quotes you get online don't include all the fees. I thought I was getting the room for $10 / night, and was surprised to see a mandatory $16 / night service fee on my reservation small print.

I've stayed at Arizona Charlie's, it's cheap and a little closer than the strip. (13.2 miles to the Scenic Loop entrance, 24 minute driving time.) That's about two miles and another few minutes closer than the Palace Station.

For convenience without exorbitant rates, the Sun Coast looks to be the best (8.7 miles to Scenic Loop entrance, 15 minute driving time.)

Add 14.2 miles and another 17 minutes to any of the above to get to the turnoff for Windy and Black Velvet Canyons (and then whatever it takes to drive in from there...)

Bonnie Springs is the most convenient for climbing but not the cheapest, and it is rather wacky. 5.4 miles (8 minutes) to Scenic Loop entrance and 8.8 miles (11 minutes) to the Windy and Black Velvet Canyons turn off. A major plus is you get a petting zoo. The downsides are that you are, of course, farther from Vegas if you want to go to a restaurant or bar and...you get a petting zoo.

The campground is not a pleasant place in March. Chilly howling winds many mornings make alpine starts a tribulation. When I've stayed in a hotel, we've gotten a mini-fridge in the room to store some breakfast stuff and beaten the shivering campground crowd to the loop entrance every single day.

I truly miss the days of the 'Ho',,,the Westward Ho motel and casino that was right across from the Riviera on the Strip next to McDonalds for years. I stayed there many a cheap trip to Vegas. It was as cheap as 18 bucks a night sometimes back in the 90's. Think it got torn down about 2005

I take my own coffee maker and a cooler for the room. Even without a fridge, they all have ice machines for the guests. Easy enough to eat breaky in the room or on the drive. On a long or short trip, I just get more rest and climbing in than hasslin' with the campin' thing, especially given that you have to drive anyhow.

Tried the Sahara, and, just didn't like the hassle of gettin' in and out. Palace Station has always been nice as security for your car is decent, separate lodging that you don't have to walk through the casino to get to, fair food in a pinch, rooms are pretty ok and plenty big enough.

I'd be curious to hear about AZ Chaz and Suncoast in comparison if someone has stayed at the Palace Station and one of the others. Anyone?

Palace Station we've rolled our coolers and backpacks thru the lobby....coffe makers, and full set ups for making lunches......

Food is cheap and not bad at the Asian cafe in the hotel......

Been there a couple of times for climbing at RR.....

Head across I15 and have a couple of drinks at the Atrisan Hotel, on a Friday night that ill place is pretty cool.....

I've stayed at boulder station casino for $13/night. There's also a starbucks in the lobby that opens at 5am for oatmeal and coffee.

I was talking with some folks at a belay and they got a vacation rental pretty close to the park. apparently they got a pretty large furnished house. they used the website airbnb.com.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
